Oneonta Overview

The apartments in Oneonta, NY, can be the ideal place to call home. This city in New York is smaller, with about 12,700 people calling it home, but it feels like a modern community offering a traditional suburban feel. It is noted as a friendly community with a bit of a small town vibe (even though it’s quite modern in its offerings) and an arts scene. With two colleges in the area, Oneonta offers great access to higher education.

What is the history of Oneonta?

Oneonta was long the home of the Algonquin and Iroquois speaking people. The Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy as said to have been prominent in the area prior to European arrival. The first American settlers didn’t arrive until around 1775 and it wasn’t until 1800 that a small hamlet developed in the area. By mid-century, the railroads had made it to the city, which helped to bring it to life with more people moving into the area. In 1908, the community was first incorporated into a city.

How is the weather in Oneonta?

Like much of New York, Oneonta has rough winter months with temperatures around freezing or lower and hot summers with temperatures averaging in the 80s. It is a rather rainy area getting between 55 and 60 inches each year, and the area does see snow, generally about 50 inches a year. Humidity can also be a factor during the hot, sulky days of summer. Spring tends to be wet, with temperatures warming into the 60s and 70s. After the hot summer, the falls cool, crisp area is often a welcome experience.

How do I get around town?

I-88 is the largest thoroughfare in the area, running along the outskirts of the city. The center of town is home to NY State Route 7 and NY State Route 23, both of which serve as many passenger resources. Oneonta Public Transit provides both a paratransit and a fixed route through the city with stops along Main Street.

What is the Oneonta commute like?

Without a main highway running through the city, there is far less traffic in the city itself. Yet, that does not mean that the area doesn’t see backups during rush hour commutes. For example, I-88 is a main path through the region and tends to have drivers backed up onto the other routes nearby. Traffic tends to be at its highest level during the 7 am to 8:30 am hours and then again in the late afternoon around 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm.
