"Houston Apartment residents who are also students interested in the absolute best education possible in their city know that it doesn't get much better than Rice University. This 285 acre tract of land practically across the street from the beautifully designed Herman Park is centrally located in the city of Houston. Rice University is 5 to 15 minutes away from almost every major destination in the city including the Texas Medical Center, Rice Shopping Village, Museum of Natural Science, Houston Zoo and Reliant Stadium. Founded in 1891 by William Marsh Rice the school was originally named The William Marsh Rice Institute for the Advancement of Letters, Science, and Art. In 1912 the school was officially opened and became one of the first of its kind to allow both male and female students during a very prejudice and sexist age. The statue that still stands to this day of William Marsh Rice was dedicated in 1930 with the name of the university changing 30 years later to William Marsh Rice University in 1960. In 1965 Rice won a lawsuit to modify its original charter which allowed Rice for the first time to admit students of all races and to charge tuition. Since that time Rice has seen a steady increase in enrollment of other ethnicity's making the school a more diverse student body. Rice is currently one of the most prestigious universities in the nation. Among national universities U.S. News & World Report rank Rice's undergraduate program seventeenth. Just one of many positive reviews Princeton Review in 2007 ranked Rice first in ""Best Quality of Life"", third for ""Best Overall Academic Experience for Undergraduates"" and for 2008 has them ranked #1 for ""Best Value"" among private institutions. With over eight schools of discipline to choose from such as the School of Social Sciences, Sheperd School of Music, Jesse H. Jones School of Management, School of Humanities and the George R. Brown School of Engineering students have a plethora of options for education. Though many request admission Rice University's undergraduate program is highly selective with offers of admission made to only about 22% of it's applicants in any given school year. There is no requirement to stay on campus, but for many students, especially incoming freshman, the experience in taking part in some of the unique traditions associated with on campus living is important. With several residential halls to choose from the rivalry between the dorms dates back to the schools opening. If they choose to live on campus, students are randomly assigned to one of residential halls. With only limited space available on campus students may also want to check out the apartment options that are available close to Rice in the nearby Village and other areas. The Houston area is filled with great apartments with different amenities that can fit any students needs. High level education, tradition and respect are just three things you're guaranteed to receive by attending Rice University. This is one of the best educations that Houston Apartment-ites' can get, are you up for the challenge?"
