When you spend $69.00 for brunch, it's got to be good, really good. The Sunday brunch at the Crown Room at Hotel Del Coronado is the best $69 you ever spend on a meal, better described as a feast. The atmosphere of the Crown Room can be described as royal, with the beautiful vaulted, 33 foot high pine ceiling with chandeliers said to be designed by the author of the Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum. A grand piano player entertains the guests with fine music. The Del hotel is a destination in itself, perched on the Beach of Coronado Island, across the causeway bridge from San Diego. The hotel encompasses an entire complex of art galleries, cool shops, courtyards, tennis courts, pools and beachfront property, as well as the Crown Room and the hotel itself. The restaurant has been attended by the Prince of Wales in 1920, and in 1927, a celebration of Charles Lindberg's first transatlantic flight was held at the Crown Room. And, the White House held its first state dinner outside of Washington, DC at the Crown Room. Before or after your brunch, make sure you take a tour of the property. The array of food at the Del Crown Room is overwhelming, so don't fill up with munchies in your apartment the night before, or that morning. Come hungry! Here is just a sampling of the offerings: If you're in the mood for breakfast, start with Café American with made to order omelets, freshly made waffles, eggs benedict, breakfast meats and eggs, along with granolas and fruit. Then, you can move to the Farm to Table to sample cured meats and cheeses, pesto and asagio, and grilled vegetable antipasti. At the Crown International section, try the Dim Sum, Osso Bucco (prepared fresh with sautéed rappini) and local tamales with roasted tomato salsa. Of course, it's only appropriate that you would find seafood at the Del, and it abounds here. Shrimp, Alaskan king crab, oysters, ahi tuna, scallops, mussels, sole, calamari and lobster are all here - prepared in a variety of ways - seared, steamed, smoked, chilled, poached and raw (sushi/ceviche). The milder tastes can be accommodated as well, with prime rib, honey baked ham, potatoes, roasted veggies and a huge variety of artisan breads. The grand finale to this incredible brunch is the desserts, and man, do they have desserts! From fruit tarts to flan, and carrot cake to cobbler, there's not much missing from this display. For those chocolate lovers there is a completely separate station named "Nothing but Chocolate" that features a chocolate fountain for dipping strawberries, wafers and marshmallows. In addition, tiramisu, mousse cake, fudges, chocolate sundaes, opera and German chocolate cakes and a truffle tower with multitudes of candy all appeal to seekers of sweets. This experience is topped off with mimosas, or sparkling wine solo, screwdrivers or Bloody Marys. Are you ready to go now? Get out of your San Diego apartment this Sunday and book your reservation for the best Sunday brunch you've ever experienced today!
