Encinitas Overview
Encinitas is on the Pacific coast in North County, San Diego, California. Sixty thousand people live in this sunny coastal paradise with some of the best surfing in the world. Encinitas isn't just for surfers, though. It has a century-old shopping district, famous botanical gardens, gorgeous hikes, delicious food, and entertainment for everyone.
What is the history of Encinitas?
There's a rich history running through the entire coastal region. Native Americans lived here 10,000 years before the Spanish invasion in 1769. The Spanish monarchy enlisted natives to help build 21 Spanish missions, which ultimately became known as El Camino Real Road (the royal road). Today, the missions run along Interstate 5. American settlers started arriving in 1875, and little coastal towns began to appear. Over a century later, in 1986, New Encinitas, Old Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Olivenhain, and Leucadia incorporated to become what is today, Encinitas.
How is the weather in Encinitas?
The weather is mild, with typical temperatures ranging between 49°F to 77°F. Chances of rain run between one percent during the summer and up to 21 percent in the wettest periods in February. It rarely gets warmer than 84°F or colder than 44°F. You can count on clear skies and summer weather from July through October, with the hottest days topping out in the high 80s during late August. December is the coldest month in Encinitas when temperatures drop to as low as 49°F.
How do I get around town?
It's easy to get around without a car via the Metropolitan Transit System's (MTS) bus service, the Breeze. Or you can hop on Metro's rail transit—The Coaster, Sprinter, or Trolley. The weather makes walking or riding a bike a pleasure as well. In fact, there are hundreds of miles of bike trails, including the popular path down old Highway 101.
What is the Encinitas commute like?
Scenic Highway 101 goes right through downtown Encinitas. I-5 is close by as well. Yes, you will have to deal with some heavy traffic if you're going to commute. The good news is that you don't have to drive everywhere. If you don't want to use public transportation, you can opt to carpool.
What are the local media outlets?
Get your daily news from the Encinitas Advocate and the Coast News Group. The San Diego Union-Tribune is also a popular read. If you want to listen to the radio, there's KPBS, Public Radio, and you'll find the top 40 on KHTS. As for local television news, look to Fox 5 San Diego, NBC on channel 7, and see channel 8 for CBS.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?
If you want to head out of Encinitas for a day or two, you can visit a historic mission in San Juan Capistrano, float away in a hot air balloon in Temecula, or take the Sunset Highway and head to Mount Laguna to go explore the great outdoors.
