Known as 'The Village by the Sea' among locals, this luxurious destination is a prime slice of tourism-based West Coast gold, offering stunning ocean views and more than its fair share of pampering amenities.
Settled in the 1800s, Carlsbad made a name for itself in the realm of agriculture, producing citrus and avocados. The city was officially incorporated in the early 1952, largely as a move to prevent it from being annexed by nearby townships, and in 1976 Carlsbad saw the completion of the first modern skateboard park in the nation. California flavor continued to help define the city through the 1990s, with additional skateboarding parks seeing construction and surfing remaining a popular draw. Legoland in 1999, a huge tourism boost, and the largest desalination plant in the country also calls the city home.
