Encinitas Overview

Encinitas is on the Pacific coast in North County, San Diego, California. Sixty thousand people live in this sunny coastal paradise with some of the best surfing in the world. Encinitas isn't just for surfers, though. It has a century-old shopping district, famous botanical gardens, gorgeous hikes, delicious food, and entertainment for everyone.

What is the history of Encinitas?

There's a rich history running through the entire coastal region. Native Americans lived here 10,000 years before the Spanish invasion in 1769. The Spanish monarchy enlisted natives to help build 21 Spanish missions, which ultimately became known as El Camino Real Road (the royal road). Today, the missions run along Interstate 5. American settlers started arriving in 1875, and little coastal towns began to appear. Over a century later, in 1986, New Encinitas, Old Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Olivenhain, and Leucadia incorporated to become what is today, Encinitas.

How is the weather in Encinitas?

The weather is mild, with typical temperatures ranging between 49°F to 77°F.  Chances of rain run between one percent during the summer and up to 21 percent in the wettest periods in February. It rarely gets warmer than 84°F or colder than 44°F.  You can count on clear skies and summer weather from July through October, with the hottest days topping out in the high 80s during late August. December is the coldest month in Encinitas when temperatures drop to as low as 49°F.

How do I get around town?

It's easy to get around without a car via the Metropolitan Transit System's (MTS) bus service, the Breeze. Or you can hop on Metro's rail transit—The Coaster, Sprinter, or Trolley. The weather makes walking or riding a bike a pleasure as well. In fact, there are hundreds of miles of bike trails, including the popular path down old Highway 101.

What is the Encinitas commute like?

Scenic Highway 101 goes right through downtown Encinitas. I-5 is close by as well. Yes, you will have to deal with some heavy traffic if you're going to commute. The good news is that you don't have to drive everywhere. If you don't want to use public transportation, you can opt to carpool.

What are the local media outlets?

Get your daily news from the Encinitas Advocate and the Coast News Group. The San Diego Union-Tribune is also a popular read. If you want to listen to the radio, there's KPBS, Public Radio, and you'll find the top 40 on KHTS. As for local television news, look to Fox 5 San Diego, NBC on channel 7, and see channel 8 for CBS.

Why live in Encinitas, CA?

There's something special about Encinitas. Maybe it's the warm California sun and miles of sandy beaches. It's also abundant with history and a laid back coastal lifestyle that's hard to beat—not to mention the gorgeous botanical gardens. Plus, you're close to San Diego, where there are even more exciting things to do and see. Living in Encinitas apartments is like living in a resort, with amenities to further enhance your quality of life.

What Encinitas landmarks should I see?

From the historical society's circa 1883 one-room schoolhouse to the La Paloma Theater in the city's century-old downtown, there are numerous sites to visit. Check out the San Dieguito Heritage Museum, where you'll find historic artifacts, records, and hear stories of the San Dieguito River Area.

What is there to do around Encinitas?

Moonlight State Beach is a must-visit. With a gorgeous wide, sandy beach, you'll always find a game of volleyball and a place to build a sandcastle. Plus, there's plenty of surfing, snorkeling, and fishing, too. The San Diego Botanical Gardens boasts over 3,000 species of plants. And you'll find fresh fruit and produce at the Leucadia Farmers Market every Sunday.

Any annual festivals or Encinitas events to know?

From the Encinitas Spring Street Fair to the Rotary Wine and Food Festival, and the Chocolate Festival—there's a festival for every season. And you don't want to miss the San Diego County Fair 10 miles down the road in Del Mar, every year from May 31st through July 4th.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

If you want to head out of Encinitas for a day or two, you can visit a historic mission in San Juan Capistrano, float away in a hot air balloon in Temecula, or take the Sunset Highway and head to Mount Laguna to go explore the great outdoors. And don't forget that Disneyland is just a little over an hour away in Anaheim. In fact, if you like fun parks, you've hit the jackpot. There's also Magic Mountain and Knox Berry Farm. Closer to home, you can visit the San Diego Zoo and Seaworld.

Where is the best place to move in Encinitas?

You'll find a variety of apartments in Encinitas with amenities, including pools, hot tubs, and more. New Encinitas, Leucadia, Old Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and Olivenhain all have their distinct personalities. New Encinitas is suburban, with a small-town feel. Old Encinitas and Cardiff-by-the-sea, are quintessential beach towns. No matter your choice, apartment living in Encinitas is a lifestyle to enjoy.
