Home to Virginia's largest public institution, George Mason University, residents of apartments in Fairfax enjoy top-quality education, shopping and cultural amenities. The city is ethnically diverse and well-educated, with a robust economy and job market for local residents.
First settled by farmers in the early 18th century, the city of Fairfax is named after the sixth Lord Fairfax of Cameron who was granted the land by King Charles. As the Town of Providence, the city was first officially established in 1805, then renamed as the Town of Fairfax in 1874 and incorporated as a city and established as the Fairfax County seat in 1961.
Fairfax experiences four distinct seasons, with hot summers and cold winters, the average high temperature in July is 89 degrees, while the average low in January is 24 degrees. The city has an average of 116 days of precipitation per year, with 44 inches of rain and 7 inches of snow annually.
A car is advisable for getting around both the city and its surrounding area. Fairfax is served by the nearby Vienna, VA station on the Washington Metro's Orange Line, connecting the city with the rest of the metropolitan DC area. The CUE bus provides intra-city transportation.
Fairfax is connected with the metropolitan DC highway network by U.S. Route 50, U.S. Route 29 and Interstate 66. Although Fairfax is only about 20 miles from downtown Washington, DC, traffic in the DC Beltway area is often bad, increasing commute times from Fairfax to downtown to 45 to 60 minutes during rush hour.
The Fairfax County Times supplies local newspaper coverage for residents, while television news service is provided by the DC metro stations of all major networks. Similarly, Fairfax is served by the major radio stations of the DC and Northern Virginia areas, including news, top 40 and religious stations.
Located in the heart of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro area, Fairfax offers a unique and extensive range of activities and amenities to its residents thanks to its proximity to the nation's capitol. The local economy is strong and well-supported by the rest of the DC metro area, with businesses such as Oracle and IBM having strong presences in the area. The Fairfax County corridor is one of the nicest residential districts in the DC metro area, with the city of Fairfax standing out as a particularly fantastic place to live.
With its long history, Fairfax has a number of impressive landmarks, including the Old Fairfax County Courthouse, Old Fairfax County Jail and City of Fairfax Historic District. The Fairfax Museum and Visitor Center chronicles the city's history, including its involvement in the Civil War.
While Fairfax residents can certainly enjoy the museums, entertainment and attractions provided by Washington, DC, Fairfax County offers a number of leisure and recreation options as well. Nearby Tysons Corner Center and Tysons Galleria form the largest shopping mall in Virginia, and George Mason University's Patriot Center and Center for the Arts host concerts and performing arts events year-round.
Fairfax hosts a number of annual festivals, including the Old Town Fairfax's Chocolate Lovers Festival and the holiday season's Festival of Lights & Carols. Every spring, the historic Blenheim estate holds a civil war reenactment for Fairfax Civil War Day.
Residents of Fairfax apartments can enjoy a number of day trips to nearby attractions. Charlottesville, home to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and the Shenandoah National Park, is within two hours of Fairfax, while the resort city of Virginia Beach is only three hours from Fairfax.
