Write a ReviewReston is only a short commute from Washington, DC and as a planned community still maintains a small city feel thanks to height and other restrictions on buildings. The city boasts a thriving mall with over 50 shops and 35 dining opportunities, making it easy for residents to take care of errands in one place.
Reston was founded in 1964 as part of plans after World War II to take advantage of spaces outside of cities for residential and corporate development. In 2012, CNNMoney Magazine rated Reston the 7th best place to live in America.
Reston has cool but mild winters, and hot and humid summers. Spring and fall offer beautiful weather in the 70s that gets residents out for shopping and walks.
People living in Reston apartments generally need a car to do most errands. However, the city is home to the Reston Town Center where you can take care of most of your dining and shopping needs. Dulles International Airport is less than 10 miles away, and the Washington, DC metro system has a Reston stop for commuters. Several buses also serve the Reston area, both within the city and for commuters.
Because Reston is only 20 minutes from Washington, DC traffic is very heavy during rush hours. The Capital Beltway takes commuters into Washington, DC, and it is a short drive to the Dulles Toll Road. Reston Parkway gets drivers through the center of town and Wiehle Avenue runs through the residential section.
Reston residents have access to Washington, DC television and radio outlets, giving them a vast range of choices from public radio, country, jazz and other genres. The Washington Post print and online editions keep Reston residents current on local, national, and international news.
As a planned community, there are very strict rules about the types and sizes of buildings. This gives Reston a smaller feel than other cities located so close to major urban areas. It is a short trip to beautiful parks, and a quick drive or Metro ride to get to DC.
Because Reston is a young city, most popular landmarks such as the National Mall are located in nearby Washington, DC. The Wolf Trap Center is a short trip away, and offers performances by national and internationally famous performers in an outdoor venue.
People who like the outdoors visit Lake Fairfax Park in Reston. The park has a campground and offers fishing, picnic areas and boat rentals. For a day of shopping, dining or taking in a movie, Reston Town Center has it all, including a skating rink in the winter.
The Reston Town Center hosts Taste of Reston each year, blocking off streets to give visitors a chance to stroll and taste cuisine from various cultures and Reston restaurants. Great Grapes offers residents the opportunity to taste wine from various Virginia growers, and the city hosts the annual Norther Virginia Fine Arts Festival.
Reston residents who love museums and the arts can take a quick trip into Washington, DC for a weekend or week-long getaway. People who love the outdoors travel to the nearby Blue Ridge Mountain area, or head east to the beaches of Maryland and Virginia.
As a planned city, Reston has pretty clearly designated business and residential areas. Most apartment are in the northeastern section of the city, in small and medium-sized buildings.
