Virginia Beach, VA is on the southeastern coast of Virginia. You'll find it where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Chesapeake Bay. Virginia Beach is known for its three-mile long boardwalk that sits on the ocean. It's a great area for singles, couples, and families alike. If you enjoy all that living on the water brings with it, then you've come to the right place, and with a population just under half a million, you'll find that when you're off the beach, there is plenty of dining, culture, and shopping to keep you busy.

What is the history of Virginia Beach?

The first to settle the Virginia Beach area were the Chesepian Indians, however, in 1607 Captain Christopher Newport arrived in three ships carrying just over hundred men. They named the area Cape Henry. In the early days, this area consisted of plantations, but by 1922 the boardwalk was built and the city began its journey to become the city you see today.

How is the weather in Virginia Beach?

While it's true that Virginia Beach, VA is a beach town, it does still have four seasons to enjoy, although the winter months are much more moderate than other areas of the country. The average temperature in July is in the 80's and the average temperature in January is in the low 50's. You can also expect about 48 inches of rain per year as well as 7 inches of snow.

How do I get around town?

Most who live in Virginia Beach get around by car. Most tourists drive to the beach, and even those living in the area do find that a car is necessary. There is an international airport in Norfolk which is a quick drive away. The airport does have shuttle service to the beach as well. You'll find a trolley service on the boardwalk as well, so once on the beach, you can park your car and either walk or take the trolley.

What is the Virginia Beach commute like?

During the summer, the traffic can be heavy. This is in large part to all of the tourists driving in to enjoy the beach. Surveys show that about one-third of residents drive at least 40 minutes each way. There are many highways in and around the area of Virginia Beach. This includes I-264 which comes into the area at Parks Avenue and 21st Street and 22nd Street.

What are the local media outlets?

If you're a music lover, then rest assured you'll find plenty of good music in to listen to here. From WCDG with hits from the 60s and 70s to WFOG - easy listening, and even BOB FM that plays everything, you can mix it up as much as you like. There are also a couple of local newspapers to help keep you current as well. These are The Virginian - Pilot Chesapeake Clipper, and Tidewater Hispanic Newspaper.

Ask anyone that lives here, and they can give you a whole list of reasons to move to Virginia Beach. One advantage is location. It is within 50% of the country's population. On top of that, the economy is doing well, and there are plenty of opportunities here. The schools are great , and the beach provides endless outdoor activities for the whole family. Not to mention Virginia is considered one of the best places to start a business. It's truly a place that anyone can be happy calling home from kids to seniors.

What Virginia Beach landmarks should I see?

Virginia Beach has got a lot of history, so get out there and start enjoying. From the Cape Henry Lighthouse built in 1792 to the boardwalk, there is plenty to see. For families consider a few hours at the Hunt Club Farm and for those that have just got to fish, there's no place quite like the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier. Even if you're not a fisherman, it's a great view.

What is there to do around Virginia Beach?

If you're in Virginia Beach, then the Virginia Aquarium is a must. It gives you an opportunity to get up close and personal with turtles, seals, and even sharks. The First Landing State Park is also a great place to spend the day. It combines the beachfront with the forest and trails and marshlands. For some inside fun, be sure to check out the Old Coast Guard Station Museum.

Any annual festivals or Virginia Beach events to know?

If you enjoy planes, the Oceana Air Show in September is just what you've been looking for, and while you're on the beach, be sure to check out the Sand Soccer Tournament in June. Of course, planes aren't the only attraction here. For car lovers, Cruisin' Virginia Beach Car Show in May has got you covered. Finally, for couples or just those that love beer, the Virginia Beach Craft Beer Festival is in October.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

While you may wonder why you'd ever want to leave Virginia Beach, there are some great spots to visit not too far away. For hiking check out the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge or for more beach time there is Janes Island State Park. While you're at it, don't forget the Bodie Island Lighthouse.
