Colton is a suburb of San Bernardino in SB County. What is the history of Colton?

In 1874, the Slover Mt. Colony Association deeded one square mile of sandy land to the Southern Pacific Railroad, to make its headquarters in the San Bernardino Valley. It was a good move because the railroad helped develop the town and built a large hotel for travelers. The town even got its name from David R. Colton, an official of the Southern Pacific Railroad. However, it wasn't until 1875 that the first train came rolling through. Then, in 1877, the Colton Land and Water Company formed, and the town incorporated as a sixth-class city with a population of less than one thousand.

You can expect weather temperatures to range from 43°F to 96°F throughout the year, with clear, hot, and arid summers. Mid-June through the end of September is the year's hottest time when the average daily temperature is typically above 90°F. Hot temperatures usually peak sometime in mid-August, with highs of 96°F and lows down to 64°F. It'll start cooling off in October, and from the end of November to mid-March, highs of 72°F and below are typical. January is the coldest month, with average temperatures between 43°F and 67°F.

The old west museum boasts displays from various Colton pioneer families, late 19th and early 20th-century women's clothes, and historic Hazel Olson paintings. You'll also learn about Virgil Earp, the city's first-ever marshal, who was Wyatt Earp's brother. San Bernardino County is full of creative culture. The San Bernardino County Museum is another local landmark with cultural and natural history and a live animal gallery. And the California Route 66 Museum is a showcase of Americana and California history, with cars, photographs, and memorabilia, on D-Street, Route 66.

If you're searching for fun things to do close to apartments in Colton, you'll want to check out the Fiesta Village Family Fun Park. Enjoy miniature golf, roller skating, a batting cage, go-carts, and even laser tag. And if you're in the mood to be outdoors, you'll find plenty of outdoor fun fishing, camping, hiking, mountain biking, golfing, and more throughout San Bernardino County. You can even go Hang Gliding and Parasailing close to home. Also, close by in downtown San Bernardino is the beautiful California Theater on West 4th Street. It is one of the five art deco theaters in all of California. It was a vaudeville theater until it became a movie theater in 1928. Today you can see live theater, dance, and listen to the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra.

Any annual festivals or Colton events to know?

From the antique boat show, air shows, and the classic car show to beer and wine, and music festivals, there's always something happening in or near Colton. And you want to be here for the San Bernadino County fair that runs from May 29th through June 26th, 2021. The Spring Garden Show at the Lawrence Hutton Community Center is a popular annual festival featuring flowers, including orchids, cactus, succulents, fruit, nuts, and vegetables. And, on April 24th, 2021, experience the Tamale Festival in nearby Riverside. With entertainment, a beer garden, and the best tamale competition, there's food and fun for the whole family.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Take I-10 E and CA-62 E to go camping, hiking, and rock climbing less than two hours away in Joshua Tree National Park. You'll discover desert ecosystems, fascinating plants and animals, and a surreal desert landscape unlike any other. The gorgeous San Bernardino National Forest and Big Bear Lake are close by, too, with fun for the whole family year-round, from hiking and fishing to skiing and snowboarding. Or, head down I-10 W and enjoy the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. You can keep on driving to the beautiful California coast and spend the weekend in Long Beach. Or even take a drive on Pacific Coast Highway for a week-long adventure.
