What is the history of Colton?
In 1874, the Slover Mt. Colony Association deeded one square mile of sandy land to the Southern Pacific Railroad, to make its headquarters in the San Bernardino Valley. It was a good move because the railroad helped develop the town and built a large hotel for travelers. The town even got its name from David R. Colton, an official of the Southern Pacific Railroad. However, it wasn't until 1875 that the first train came rolling through. Then, in 1877, the Colton Land and Water Company formed, and the town incorporated as a sixth-class city with a population of less than one thousand.
