The West Rock Nature Center is near the West Rock apartments, obviously, and offers a great way to get into nature with its proximity. Any New Haven apartment dweller has access to this lovely park that offers learning about nature to any age person. West Rock Nature Center takes up over 40 acres of woods and grassy areas and features over 300 species of different plants. A visitor center is located here, and describes to residents of West Rock apartments the various life forms found at the nature center, and has interactive displays to enjoy. There is also a nature house featured here, and this is where you can look at insects and lizards, and live reptiles and amphibians that are both indigenous to Connecticut and from farther off areas of the country. Wintergreen Brook is the water passed over when the park is entered by residents of New Haven apartments, and it winds through the park, this way and that, and features a beautiful waterfall and gorge. You can see much of the beauty of the park by walking on the nicely marked trails. Picnicking and bird watching are excellent here, with several spots for that fall, spring or summer picnic and ten acres of field that are perfect for birding. The picnic grove at the park will accommodate up to 25 people for that special gathering or birthday party. Ranger-led programs occur throughout the year, so invite a couple of kids from your New Haven apartment complex to join you some Saturday to learn something new about nature.
