New Haven, Connecticut is nestled along the New Haven Harbor on the northern shore and is a gorgeous place to settle down. This is the second-largest city in the state with a booming economy and a rich history. The city is thriving with a population of more than 130,000 people. It is the “Cultural Capital of Connecticut,” with a range of attractions and amenities. The city is very welcoming with many charming available New Haven apartment communities and friendly neighbors.

What is the history of New Haven?

New Haven was founded back in 1638 by English Puritans. The Puritans sailed in from the Massachusetts Bay Colony and hoped to establish a better community, with a government that was intertwined with the church. Before the Europeans settled in the area, the original inhabitants were the Quinnipiac Native American tribe. The tribe lived in villages surrounding the harbor and lived off farming the land and fishing. It wasn’t until 1638, that the Puritan settlers claimed the land.

How is the weather in New Haven?

New Haven is lies between a humid continental climate and humid subtropical climate. This means you can expect the city to have weather similar to New York. The summers are warm and humid, with temperatures between 60-70°F, which can rise above 90°F for a few days of the year. On the other hand, winters are cold, which comes with some different types of weather, from a bit of snow that is interspersed with rainfall to mixed precipitation. Most of the weather in New Haven is caused by the location, being offshore it can see temperature differences along the coastline and inland. This means that spring and fall can also vary in temperature and weather patterns, but overall are mild and pleasant with temperatures around 60°F.

How do I get around town?

Due to the fact that Yale University is the small area of New Haven, there is a large amount of pedestrian and bicycle commuters. Students can walk around the downtown easily, from bars to the different amenities scattered throughout the area. However, for those who don’t live close to public transportation or in the downtown area, a vehicle will be required to get around New Haven. The city is connected by the New Haven Division of Connecticut Transit bus system, with has 24 routes all originating from New Haven Green in downtown. For those traveling outside the city for work, New Haven is connected to New York by a railway system, which allows resident to commute to and from New York with ease. Not to mention, the Tweed New Haven Regional Airport, which is in city limits just 3 miles east of the business district.

What is the New Haven commute like?

When the city was built, it was laid out on a four-by-four grid, which is known as the “Nine Square Plan,” making the city a breeze to navigate. The central square in downtown was even recognized by the American Institute of Certified Planners as a National Historic Landmark. New Haven is located at the intersection of interstate 95 and Interstate 91, which connects residents with New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and even the Canadian border. However, I-95 is infamous for major traffic jams that only get worse the closer you get to New York City. Traffic has always been a concern in the city, and drivers, bikers and pedestrians always have safety in mind when commuting, which is something to keep in mind if commute time is important to you.

What are the local media outlets?

The New Haven Resister is the daily newspaper that serves residents in the area. However, there are also “alternative” media sources, from the New Haven Advocate to the New Haven Independent online newspaper. The city is also served by several student-run papers, like the Yale Herald or the Yale Daily News. Residents can tune into WTNH, WCTX, or the MyNetworkTV for news broadcasts in the area. Not to mention all the great radio stations in the area, from rock to country.

People from all over come to the city, as it is known across the county for its “apizza,” which is said to be some of the best in the world.

In downtown New Haven alone, there are tons of places listed on the National Historic Register. From the William Pinto House to the Ninth Square Historic District, these buildings date back for many decades and different ethnic groups. The city of New Haven is known for the prestigious Yale University, which is an part of the economy as largest employer in the area. Not only that, but the city is home to the Southern Connecticut State University, Gateway Community College and Albertus Magnus College.

What is there to do around New Haven?

New Haven has a wide variety of things to do, from music venues, museums and established theaters in the area. The city is home to many production houses and theatres, from Yale repertory Theatre to the Shubert Theatre. The variety of museums in the area, like the Yale University Art Gallery or the Connecticut Children’s Museum, there is always something fun to do. On top of it all, the music scene in New Haven is amazing, from the free concerts to the different venues like Toad’s Place or the College Street Music Hall.

Any annual festivals or New Haven events to know?

New Haven has many festivals happening all year round. From the New Haven Jazz Festival to the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, the city likes to celebrate its rich and diverse culture. The city also has a bunch of festivals that are celebrated by church-goers in the area. One of the main festivals is the Saint Patrick’s Day parade, which draws a large crowd every single year. Other parishes in the city celebrate festivals, from the Carnival in honor of St. Bernadette Soubirous to the Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

There are a few nearby vacation opportunities within a few hours drive of New Haven, from attractions like Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo or the Mystic Aquarium. For those looking for a relaxing vacation there are many natural wonders to see, from watching the birds to seeing whales. Plus all the countless beaches, coves and inlets along the shoreline of Connecticut to relax at.

The city has been given the nickname “The Elm City,” with many large elms in the area. This is due to the first ever public tree planting program in the United States. New haven is a special place that is why people from all cultures want to come here believe it or not Ernie's Pizzeria has the best pizza in New Haven and I went to the Ives library and the community actual put on a show showcasing all kinds of talent and it was free and fun..and there is so much to eat it is crazy...every where in New Haven but pizza....like I said Ernie got you...it is better than Wooster square dare I say oooo...To late..and you can always catch a bus or train..and the vibes are unshakeable because of our many cultures...I once saw a movie on a giant screen at mayor Daniel school on Congress Ave..thanks to parks and rec..New Haven can be wonderful..but I gotta say prices are high and money can fly...but unfortunately these are the times...stay blessed.
