Explore San Diego
The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is THE museum to visit for a full day of excellent exhibits that are interactive, amazing and fun for all ages. Located in the multifaceted Balboa Park just east of downtown San Diego, it's a destination to see when you're in the area. From gross to energizing, all sorts of creative processes exploring science are offered, and a few are listed below. A few samples of the gross in the "Grossology" section are the "Belch-A-Baby" game where participants learn how some species of frogs give birth by belching them out, and "Party Pooper" in which visitors guess which poop belongs to each animal. Blood sucking leeches, dung beetles and gassy cows are also detailed. "So Watt: An Illuminating Look at Energy" is a personal favorite, and shows how many ways there are to covert energy into electricity. Be ready to exert a little energy yourself to produce it. The "Tinkering" exhibit lets the Albert Einstein wannabes create and produce inventions, with assistance from Fleet exhibit interpreters. You can also just play with new materials and technologies, maybe creating a new contraption for your apartment. Are you seeing the color blue when the word is written in red? Does the bar that says "hot" feel warm or cold to you? These and other mind altering tricks are found at the Gallery of Illusions and Perceptions. The exhibit shows how your mind and body work together, and sometimes against each other to perceive things. You'll see some extremely cool daily photos from the NASA Hubble Space Telescope in the "Origins in Space" section. Here, find out how discoveries in space have spun off into accomplishments here on earth. You can learn about healthy living and how to live a long life at the "Aging for All Ages" exhibit, and learn about water sources and conservation efforts in San Diego in the San Diego's Water: From Source to Tap." Should you bring along children, the Fleet has a specialized "Kid City," as well as plenty of opportunities for children in the museum. After extensive renovation and technology updates, the IMAX Dome theater and planetarium will reopen in mid-December for eye-opening films on the gigantic screen. Throughout the museum are multiple gadgets for individual exploration - to eavesdrop on others or to reach into a twirling tornado. It's a great day, every day at the Fleet.
