What is the history of St. Joseph?

St. Joseph was founded by fur trader Joseph Robidoux. Located on the banks of the Missouri River, the city was incorporated in 1843. It was a frontier town and busy outpost during its early days, serving as a supply post and last point of contact for travelers who planned to use the river to head off to the "Wild West." St. Joseph was also the westernmost point with railway accessibility until the American Civil War was over. The population peaked around 1900 at over 100,000 people, and hovers around 72,000 today.

How is the weather in St. Joseph?

St. Joseph, MO is classified as a humid subtropical climate, but it's very close to the edge of a humid continental climate. What does that mean for the weather in the area? It means warm, humid summers with plenty of sunshine and some thunderstorms, along with winters that can be cold and perfect for outdoor sports. You can expect to get between 12 and 20 inches of snow, on average. Spring and fall are stable, relatively quiet seasons, with some rainy days and moderate temperatures.

How do I get around town?

There are two interstate highways serving the city, along with four US routes and four state routes. That makes it easy to get into and out of St. Joseph by car, and most people who live there own at least one vehicle. However, if you're right in the downtown part of the city, living in one of the great St. Joseph apartments, you can use the bus service to get around to most places. The nearest commercial airport is 35 miles south at Kansas City International Airport, and Jefferson Lines provides intercity bus service between St. Joseph and Kansas City, for added convenience.

What is the St. Joseph commute like?

Because St. Joseph isn't a huge metropolis, you generally don't have a lot of traffic issues to deal with. There can be congestion sometimes, especially during the summer months and holiday periods, but most of the time the area is easy to navigate. With I-29 and I-229, you can use the interstate highways to get to and from areas of the city. It's also easy to use US 36, 59, 71, and 169 to navigate to specific parts and neighborhoods, along with using the four state routes and side streets to hone in on a particular location.

What are the local media outlets?

There are three low-power and two full-power television stations in the St. Joseph area, along with ten different radio stations. Additionally, the News-Press & Gazette has its headquarters in the city, and the company has an interest in many newspapers, TV stations, and radio stations throughout the midwest and western part of the US. Many TV stations from the Kansas City area are also available in St. Joseph, and there are three local newspapers: The Regular Joe, The Saint Joseph Telegraph, and the St. Joseph News-Press.

St. Joseph has significant landmarks to explore. If you like history, the Missouri Theatre and several other buildings have been preserved from the city's early days. Additionally, Missouri Western State University is located in St. Joseph, and there are also three special focus institutions in the area. There are four branches of the public library in the city, two of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. If you're a history buff, or you just love the look and feel of older architecture, this can be a great city for you to explore and enjoy your interests.

What is there to do around St. Joseph?

Whether you're living in a St. Joseph apartment or visiting the city as a tourist, there's always something to do. The local economy is diverse and vibrant, with all kinds of shopping and dining experiences to enjoy. East Hills Mall and the Shoppes at North Village are both great retail spaces, and offer almost everything residents might need or want. There are also several other shopping districts, along with parks and green spaces to explore when the weather is nice. Downtown St. Joseph offers restaurants, bars, and nightlife options, as well.

Any annual festivals or St. Joseph events to know?

St. Joseph is home to the Apple Blossom Festival in May, along with St. Patrick's Fiesta in August and PumpkinFest in October. In November, you can enjoy the Sugarplum Festival at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, and experience additional festival options throughout the year. There's always something to do in St. Joseph and the surrounding area, and new festivals come and go all the time.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

The closest place to vacation would be Kansas City, where there's more to do simply because it's a larger place. Other great vacation spots around St. Joseph include Sears Community Lake, which is around 100 miles east of the city. Heading west, you can find Tuttle Creek Cove Park and the Big Indian Archers recreation area by traveling just over 100 miles. If you travel north, you'll find Glenwood Lake Park in Iowa, along with several great Iowa and Nebraska cities to explore. Travelling south from St. Joseph takes you into Kansas, with plenty to do in Centerville, Manhattan, and surrounding communities.

Where is the best place to move in St. Joseph?

The great thing about St. Joseph is there are plenty of good places to live in the city and right outside of it. When you're looking for your next home, considering apartments in St. Joseph is a great idea. If you want to live in the most desirable area of the city, that's typically areas to the south. However, there are affordable spaces in the western part of the city that are still great locations to settle in and feel at home. The affordable cost of living and suburban feel that comes with so much of  the area is a big draw for anyone moving into a great apartment and getting ready to explore everything the city has to offer.
