A very up to date airport is the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, as far as baggage services, WIFI location availability, a cell phone parking lot and disabled services. This is an appealing advantage for the the New Orleans apartment dweller. The airport itself has been offering commercial airline service since 1946, and was considered to be one of the largest airports at the time. It was also the first airport in the US to install an Instrument Landing System. In 1960, the municipal airport was officially named New Orleans International Airport. Expansion and addition of new concourses, renovations and upgrade have occurred regularly over the past 50 years, to make it as easy to use and visitor-friendly as possible. In August 2001, the airport was renamed to the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in honor of the musician's 100th birthday, a New Orleans born legend. The airport itself is located just outside the city, to the northwest of New Orleans in the suburb of Kenner, although it is owned by the city. Four concourses accommodate the comings and goings of travelers, with airlines of Northwest Airlines and US Airways in Concourse A, Southwest Airlines in Concourse B, AirTran, American and United in Concourse C, and Continental, JetBlue and Delta in Concourse D. Express and smaller plane lines of the major carriers are available as well, at the appropriate gates mentioned above. The international gates are located in Terminal C, with flights to Canada and Mexico. Sitting at an average of only 4.5 feet above sea level, LANOIA is the second lowest lying international airport in the world, and located in hurricane prone territory. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, but with limited damage to the airport with the exception of roofs, hangars and fencing. One week afterward, the airport served as a staging area for evacuees, and was open to military and humanitarian aid aircraft. The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is ranked 4th of the 47 busiest United States airports based upon the relatively few flight delays and lower flight loads by US News and World Report in February 2008. For ease of transportation when visitors come to visit you, and if they are not staying in your New Orleans apartment, the airport can have baggage shipped directly to the visitor's hotel. This service is also available to visitors when they are leaving the city - to have their luggage sent to their airline. Advance Check In has an office on the lower level, and can be reached at www.advancecheckin.com.
