It’s a sleepy New England town with old world character located on the outskirts of the major metropolitan city of Boston. Salem apartment renters can relax in the pleasant, low-crime town while working and playing in a big city. It is also surrounded by vast natural resources that include mountain ranges and national parks. Apartments in Salem can be relatively inexpensive, especially when you consider the quality of life residents enjoy.

What is the history of Salem?

Salem was settled in the mid-17th Century as a northern Massachusetts’ parish until the boundary line was altered in 1741. It was then renamed Salem when it joined New Hampshire. The quaint New England town grew in prominence at the turn of the 20th Century when Canobie Lake Park became a leading leisure destination driven by trolley service

Salem is also a winter wonderland that averages several feet of snow annually.

How do I get around town?

Like many New England towns, Salem residents like their cars. However, the Cooperative Alliance for Transportation (CART) system was established 10 years ago. It provides curb-to-curb rides for very low fares. It’s basically Salem’s answer to public transportation and has been well received by the community. The town also benefits from rail and bus services linked to the greater Boston area.

More than 95 percent of the people in Salem rely on cars for their commute to work. Most drive alone but about seven percent carpool. Less than one percent walk to work. What are the local media outlets?

Where is the best place to move in Salem?

Salem has a relatively central New England location that lends itself to weekend excursions such as hiking the White Mountains to the north or day-tripping to a trendy small city like Portland. If you’re looking for convenience, Salem apartments in the neighborhoods along Route 28 have a lot to offer. There are numerous shops and restaurants and the rents are considered relatively inexpensive. The northern area of Salem is a little quieter, slightly more expensive but there are fewer apartments.
