When one thinks of St. Louis cuisine, sushi may not exactly be the first thing that jumps to mind. This is the mid-west after all, where raw fish, regardless of how fresh, is more likely to be thought of as bait rather than a delicacy; fortunately for the more adventurous St. Louis-area apartment-ites among us, local favorite Wasabi offers up not only quality, but exceptionally unique sushi. From its perfectly-coined name to the intentionally open floor plan, Wasabi instantly creates an atmosphere fitting of such a civilized and artistic meal as sushi. The wait staff are known for exceptional service, oftentimes clad in traditional kimono's and always quick with a smile or menu suggestion. Bamboo accent highlights and a soft lantern-filled lighting scheme help to complete the perfectly calming ambiance, with the lushly piped-in traditional musical soundtrack scarcely audible over the restaurant's bubbling table fountain. Of course, atmosphere alone is hardly enough to keep the St. Louis-area apartment-ites coming back in droves; Wasabi's seasoned chefs know you are only as good as the last piece of fish you serve, and they pride themselves not only on freshness but on presentation. Flair is exceptional, with even such common items as the always-ordered California roll dashed with a surprising jot of tangy eel sauce for an added kick. The appetizer selection is comprised of the usual assortment of edamame, dumplings and tempura, while the sushi itself ranges from the basics (yellowtail, salmon) to the exceedingly rare (and, if ill-prepared, very deadly) puffer fish. Wasabi's head chef is in fact one of the only culinary experts in the nation greenlighted to serve the puffer, although with a two day advance reservation mandatory and a price tag of $90 many St. Louis-area apartment-ites are likely to marvel at, rather than feast upon, the novelty. The drink selections, in keeping with the restaurant's overall theme, often exceed expectations of even the most fickle apartment-ite. Asahi beer and warmed plum wine rule the roost, although the usual assortment of teas and soft drinks are also available. Moderately priced for such a classy establishment, Wasabi ensures St. Louis-area apartment-ites can enjoy an evening of exceptional and exotic cuisine while still having enough money left at the end of the meal to order that dish of fried green tea ice cream.
