West Allis Overview

If you?re looking for good living in the heart of America?s upper midwest in one of the nation?s largest cities, then apartments in West Allismight be for you. West Allis is the largest suburb of the city of Milwaukee, located in the county of the same name. The population of West Allis is just a bit over 60,000 people. West Allis apartments offer an easy commute to the downtown Milwaukee business district for those working there, and easy access to all the attractions and amenities the big city has to offer.

What is the history of West Allis?

The city is named for Edward Allis, whose manufacturing company rose to prominence in the Milwaukee area late 19th century. In 1901 his company became the Allis-Chalmers company which built a new plant west of the city in what was then known as the town of North Greenfield. The company soon became the largest manufacturing firm in the area, and in 1906 the town became the city of West Allis, driving the population growth that made it become the largest suburb of Milwaukee.

How is the weather in West Allis?

The city?s close proximity to the Great Lakes has a big effect on its weather, making it changeable and often harsh. The lake effect brings cold winds in the fall and winter, with lots of snow and freezing temps. They also contribute to occasionally severe thunderstorms in the warm months, but the weather in summer is generally mild and pleasant.

How do I get around town?

Most people who live in West Allis apartments own a car to get around town and greater Milwaukee, but the Milwaukee County Transit System, the largest in the state, provides scheduled bus service all over West Allis and Milwaukee. Uber, Lyft, and cab services are also readily available, and the city is very bicycle friendly with bike lanes and trails just about everywhere. Amtrak has a commuter rail line in Milwaukee and West Allis that runs to Chicago and other destinations, and the city is served by two large airports.

What is the West Allis commute like?

As the largest suburb of one of America?s top five largest cities you can imagine the commute into and through town can often be hectic and slow. West Allis is served by Interstate 94 which heads south to Chicago and also by Interstate 41 - 894.

What are the local media outlets?

If you?re renting in West Allis apartments you have access to all the TV and radio stations that originate in Milwaukee, as well as the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Shepherd Express newspapers. However the city itself hosts four television stations, one of them the Spanish language Telemundo, operated by Weigel Broadcasting in an old Allis-Chalmers property.

What is there to do around West Allis?

The city has plenty of restaurants, pubs, and stores located within the boundaries of the suburb, but most of your entertainment options will be over in Milwaukee itself, where you?ll find plenty. Besides the dining, shopping, cultural attractions, and nightlife, with many bars and nightclubs serving up the beer that made Milwaukee famous, you can take the kids to the interactive adventure of Discovery World, check out the fine art in the Grohmann Museum, or stroll down the Monarch Trail where the colorful butterflies make their home in the summer.

Any annual festivals or West Allis events to know?

Milwaukee proper is nicknamed the ?City of Festivals?, and there?s always something going on all year round. Summerfest is a two-week celebration featuring good food and drink and live entertainment. West Allis itself is the location for the annual Wisconsin State Fair which draws huge crowds. The city is also known for ?Candy Cane?, a long stretch of street that has been showing off fantastic Christmas lights and displays since 1984 and brings in people from all over the region.
