What is the history of West Allis?
The city is named for Edward Allis, whose manufacturing company rose to prominence in the Milwaukee area late 19th century. In 1901 his company became the Allis-Chalmers company which built a new plant west of the city in what was then known as the town of North Greenfield. The company soon became the largest manufacturing firm in the area, and in 1906 the town became the city of West Allis, driving the population growth that made it become the largest suburb of Milwaukee.
How is the weather in West Allis?
The city?s close proximity to the Great Lakes has a big effect on its weather, making it changeable and often harsh. The lake effect brings cold winds in the fall and winter, with lots of snow and freezing temps. They also contribute to occasionally severe thunderstorms in the warm months, but the weather in summer is generally mild and pleasant.
How do I get around town?
Most people who live in West Allis apartments own a car to get around town and greater Milwaukee, but the Milwaukee County Transit System, the largest in the state, provides scheduled bus service all over West Allis and Milwaukee. Milwaukee proper is nicknamed the ?City of Festivals?, and there?s always something going on all year round. Summerfest is a two-week celebration featuring good food and drink and live entertainment. West Allis itself is the location for the annual Wisconsin State Fair which draws huge crowds. The city is also known for ?Candy Cane?, a long stretch of street that has been showing off fantastic Christmas lights and displays since 1984 and brings in people from all over the region.

Chicago is a favorite vacation destination for those living in West Allis apartments, as are the hotels and B&Bs to be found along Lake Michigan.
