Hampton Overview

The City of Hampton enjoys a central location along the mid-Atlantic region. This is a good base to begin a holiday tour of the central coast, or even better, choose this as your permanent base. Located at the eastern end of numerous transportation networks, apartments in Hampton can provide a resident all the experiences the area has to offer.

What is the history of Hampton?

First settled over 400 years ago, the area was part of the Colony of Virginia. It was then incorporated as the City of Hampton in 1849. The settlement extended north from Old Point Comfort, the home of Fort Monroe, where the early fort guarded the navigation channel between Hampton Roads and Chesapeake Bay. Today Hampton is one of seven cities which comprise the greater Hampton Roads metropolitan area.

How is the weather in Hampton?

The weather in Hampton is largely moderated by its proximity to tidewater. The warmest months are June to mid-September when temperature highs may average above 79°F, with highest temperatures around 87ºF in mid-July. This is the wet season, from mid-May through August. Hampton experiences a cooler winter season stretching from December to early March when temperatures generally stay above freezing, with highs around 48°F.

How do I get around town?

The City of Hampton has many walking trails, and an extensive network of roads and bridges. Travel on the peninsula requires crossing numerous creeks and rivers, and fortunately there are many bridges. For the driver, the area is served by a number of highways and Virginia State Routes. Two Interstate Highways are accessible in the south-central part of the city, with I-64 crossing south via a tunnel to Charters Island and I-664 heading south via the Hampton Roads Beltway.

What is the Hampton commute like?

Alternatively, you can take the bus. Hampton Roads Transit buses provide service within the city, and also offer a regional service providing access to the other cities of Hampton Roads. Greyhound Lines and Amtrak both serve Hampton through a station in neighboring Newport News. Two commercial airports serve Hampton residents: Norfolk International Airport, across the harbor in Norfolk, and nearby Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.

What are the local media outlets?

The residents of Hampton are well-served by numerous newspapers, television and radio stations. The local daily paper is the Daily Press out of Newport News. All major network television affiliates serve the area, as well as PBS and several cable services.

Why live in Hampton, VA?

Located at the center of so much history for the country, it is not surprising to find many landmarks of note in Hampton. Besides Fort Monroe itself, the national Hampton Downtown Historic District consists of over 30 sites. There are a number of military bases, both historical and current within the city. In addition, seven colleges and universities can be found in the area, including Hampton University.

What Hampton landmarks should I see?

Fort Monroe National Monument is a huge draw for visitors. Surrounded by a moat, the fort is the largest stone fort built in the U.S. Hampton is also home to the Virginia Air and Space Center and the Hampton Coliseum.

What is there to do around Hampton?

Residents and visitors enjoy the beaches and parks, including Buckroe Beach and Sandy Bottom Nature Park.

Any annual festivals or Hampton events to know?

You can get out and enjoy the Hampton Jazz Festival every June with a standard lineup of classic soul artists, or sample the many other events which keep the peninsula hopping. Living at tidewater, there are many opportunities to be out on the water including touring and fishing.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

For weekends away residents of Hampton can jump on on a train or access the interstate highways and visit Washington, DC, in under three hours. Or, in less than an hour, explore south along the bay to Virginia Beach.

Where is the best place to move in Hampton?

If a walk on the beach every morning is an appealing way to start your day, the neighborhood of Buckroe Beach may be an attractive area to live. This neighborhood is located on Chesapeake Bay and has a long history as a focus for recreation in the area. With recent city improvements, an apartment in this residential area may be of interest to many. Across the city, Hampton Woods, has an entirely different ambiance. If you are looking for green spaces, and more of the suburban vibe, you could relax here. Alternatively, there is the Victoria Boulevard Historic District. This primarily residential neighborhood has the historic atmosphere of old Hampton as it was originally planned as a streetcar suburb in 1888. Hampton apartments near Victoria Boulevard would be a half a mile walk to the James River and a similar short jaunt to downtown for dinner.
