Encinal is the first ever printed newspaper in Alameda since 1850 and played a critical role in the movement to incorporate the city. With time, several other papers came into existence among them is the Daily Argus and the Oakland Tribune among others. As recent as 1997, the Hills Newspaper chain was sold to Knight Ridder which gave birth to Alameda Sun in 2001. Currently, the community is served by to weekly newspapers, Alameda Journal and Alameda Sun.
