Write a ReviewThere’s a lot that could be said to convince you that renting apartments in Oakland would be one of the best decisions of your life. Maybe you’d be interested in the fact that Oakland is a smart city, it’s one of the top cities when counting residents with bachelor’s degrees. Maybe you’d be intrigued by the fact that Oakland is known for its ethnic diversity, as well as its sustainability practices. Many more facts could be spewed at you, and they’d all add up to one thing—Oakland is an awesome, hip place to live.
The City of Oakland was incorporated in 1854 and quickly developed along with the growth of the railroads. It grew even further when many people flocked to the city after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Oakland’s role as a port city has contributed to its growth over the years, including a prosperous automobile manufacturing industry.
Oakland’s climate is similar to that of the temperate Mediterranean climate. Winters are mild and somewhat wet, with temperatures in the high 50s, and summers are warm and dry, with temperatures in the low 70s. The northern part of the city also experiences fog frequently, but it usually dissipates by midday.
"Oakland has many options for transit, the simplest being walking, it was named the tenth most ""walkable"" city in the US in 2011. Many Oaklanders use public transportation, including BART, AC Transit, inter-city buses, and ferries. Biking is another popular option since Oakland has made a great effort to make the city bike-friendly. Amtrak provides passenger rail service, and you can also fly out of Oakland through the Oakland, San Francisco, or San Jose International Airports."
The Bay Area is notorious for its long commutes. Oakland’s average commute is 29.2 minutes. When the Bay Bridge traffic heads east into Oakland, it splits into three freeways: The Eastshore Freeway (I-80/I-580) runs north toward Sacramento, I-880 heads south toward San Jose, and the MacArthur Freeway (I-580) runs southeast through the center of Oakland and on toward the California Central Valley.
Oakland’s major television stations are mostly broadcast from nearby San Francisco and San Jose, and the city is also served by a variety of AM and FM radio stations. The Oakland Tribune was the city’s daily newspaper until it folded in 2011. Now the East Bay Express, a locally owned weekly newspaper, is provided for free throughout the East Bay area.
Oakland is a city like no other. It lies incredibly close to another major city, San Francisco, and yet it retains its own unique identity. Oakland is a city of diversity and political activism, industry and artistry, culture, and sports teams to rally behind. It’s also known for its food, its culinary culture is likely influenced by the city’s diversity as the cuisine often features international foods, as well as locally grown produce. Oakland truly has its own place in this world, and living in apartments in Oakland would allow you to become a member of this exciting and thriving city.
The Tribune Tower, once used by the Oakland Tribune, was declared a landmark in 1976. Three times a day, the bells in the clock tower play an assortment of classical tunes. Jack London Square is a waterfront destination located on the Oakland/Alameda estuary. It’s a popular venue for dining, shopping, and recreation.
If you’re into sports, head to the Oakland Coliseum for either an Oakland Athletics baseball game or an Oakland Raiders football game. Oakland also has a thriving nightlife with a wide assortment of bars/clubs and venues like the Fox Oakland Theater hosting all kinds of musical events.
You’re going to love Oakland if you love food. Oakland Restaurant Week is a 10-day event held in January that inspires residents to explore the city’s trendy culinary scene. Other annual festivals include the Oakland Chinatown Streetfest, Art + Soul Oakland, and the Eat Real Festival.
The most obvious nearby vacation destination is San Francisco, the hilly home of the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz, and the famous cable car system. But if you’re looking for more nature-filled getaways, take a beautiful scenic road trip along the coast to Big Sur or head east to Yosemite National Park.
Oakland is home to a whopping 50 neighborhoods with their own vibes and way of life. This doesn’t make your job of choosing apartments in Oakland any easier, but it does mean you’re bound to find something you like. You could live uptown and experience the busyness of life there, or you could live with more nature in places like Lake Merritt. If you’re worried about crime, though, avoid specific parts of Eastern and Western Oakland. Rockridge, Montclair Village, and Oakland Hills are all nice, but pricey, neighborhoods. If you’re looking for more affordable places that are still interesting and relatively safe, check out Jack London Square, Emeryville, Adam’s Point, and Alameda.
