Aventura Overview

Aventura, Florida counts as one of the best places in the country for apartment dwellers. Those who live in Aventura apartments find that they stand on the precipice of some pretty grand adventures. As one of the suburbs of Miami, this town of 37,000 offers a mix of world-class restaurants, some cozy walkable neighborhoods, and pristine outdoor areas for fun in the sun.

What is the history of Aventura?

It’s probably not an exaggeration to say that Aventura, Florida began as little more than a sketch on a napkin in the early 1970s. At the time, Aventura, which gets its name from the Spanish word for “adventure,” consisted of little more than nearly 800 acres of undeveloped marsh and swamp land. Don Soffer of Turnberry Associates was the brainchild behind the sketch, and he, along with George Berlin, was responsible for all that came after. It was their work that helped to create this Miami-Dade community, including the Aventura Mall, which eventually, would bring more than 300 luxury stores to the area. By 1995, Aventura officially became an incorporated city. In the years following its incorporation, a number of luxury additions have been added to the city, with Turnberry Isle being one of them.

How is the weather in Aventura?

Aventura sits just 17 miles from Miami proper, making it a part of the greater Miami metro area. As such, its weather is about the same as Miami’s. The city experiences very hot, very humid summers. However, if the summer heat makes things a bit unbearable, the winters, though short, tend to make up for it. They’re mostly clear, with humidity and wind. Temperatures throughout the year range from 50 degrees Fahrenheit on the low end and 92 degrees Fahrenheit on the high end.

How do I get around town?

Like they do in many cities that exist inside a larger metropolitan area, residents of Aventura benefit from having access to a car. Indeed, many residents have a car. However, the city also has excellent options for walking, bike riding, and public transportation, making access to transportation reasonably democratic. One of Aventura’s most innovative forms of transportation — Freebee — is free, as its name implies. It’s an electric car system that gets paid for, in part, by brand advertising. Residents can download the Freebee app to catch a ride. There’s a transportation hub at Aventura Mall which allows mall visitors to ride to and from the Aventura mall to other stops around the area, including in the broader Miami-Dade area. Shuttle, taxi, and limousine services also exist in the city. Some areas of the city, like The Waterways and Williams Island, are good for bike riding and walking, but overall, areas like this are rare in the city.

What is the Aventura commute like?

The Miami area, of which Aventura is a part, doesn’t have such a great reputation for traffic, so those who must commute to work should be prepared for gridlock in some areas. Major roads include I-95 (north and south), US-1 (Miami to the Keys), the Florida Turnpike (north), the 836 Expressway (east and west), and 195 (east and west). Almost all of these roads see heavy traffic during peak hours. Off-peak drive times from Aventura Mall to Miami International Airport take about 30 minutes. Peak time traffic requires more time.

What are the local media outlets?

Residents of Aventura have plenty of options for keeping in the loop as far as the news is concerned. As far as radio is concerned, some popular options include Urban Radio Broadcasting, Webseradio, and Planet 17. WPLG, WPBT Studios, and Island TV account for some of the TV options in Aventura. Newspaper readers enjoy getting their news from media outlets, like South Florida Sun Times, the Miami Herald, Aventura News, and East Coast News.

Why live in Aventura, FL?

Aventura sits just outside of Miami proper but is close enough to give residents access to everything that world-class city has to offer. That said, it’s a wonderful destination in its own right. The city offers plenty of options for travel, entertainment, and nightlife, as well as free transportation options via Freebee, making this an attractive option for those who live in apartments in Aventura. The climate tends to be pretty even throughout the year, allowing for outdoor fun in the sun, even when the temperature drops in other places around the country.

What Aventura landmarks should I see?

Being a suburb of Miami means that Aventura offers residents a number of opportunities to further their education. Three big ones include the University of Miami, Miami Dade College, and Jesus is Lord International University. But life in Aventura isn’t all study time and books. Plenty of opportunities exist for fun and relaxation in the area. Aventura Mall counts as a big draw for many residents and visitors alike. Aside from offering shopping opportunities, it’s an architectural wonder to behold, and it also happens to be the home to many pieces of sculpture and public art. Aventura Arts & Cultural Center has a theater and is a great option for fans of live performances.

What is there to do around Aventura?

Living in Aventura is never dull. For avid hikers and bike riding enthusiasts, Aventura Circle offers a garden oasis right in the middle of the city. Park trails take walkers and bikers on a circular journey around a golf course and a lake. The swaying palm trees and fresh breezes off the water make this a lovely midday respite from work and life. When the days get scorching, the scorched go to Tidal Cove Miami. This water park is filled with opportunities for watery adventure from the loop-to-loop slides and swimming pools to the surfing and windsurfing options. Adventures in more open waters include boat tours, as well as water and jet skiing fun. Braver souls take these water sports to the extreme by visiting the Gator Fight Club.

Any annual festivals or Aventura events to know?

Music and culture abound in Aventura and the surrounding area — so much so that regular workday life can get in the way of all the offerings. Rock fans love Rolling Loud, while fans of Caribbean Latin culture get their groove on at the Caribbean Latin Festival. The Miami/ Coral Gables Art & Mega Festival and the Annual Las Olas Art Fair invite art lovers to enjoy samplings of fine art. The city also has a number of health and wellness fairs and festivals throughout the year, as well as some delish food and wine offerings: Black Peper is one of the most prominent ones.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

People living in Aventura apartments find that the city lives up to its name. It offers access to a world of adventure to those seeking it. Just over an hour away sits some pretty supreme sun and surf in the Florida Keys. There, visitors throw off the cares of the everyday world for seaside fun. For avid naturalists and campers, there are two destinations worth mentioning, Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park. Both of these locations are near the Keys, making this area a must-visit for avid outdoor enthusiasts. On the other end of the spectrum lie entertainments of the fantastical sort. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort and Disney World are both in Orlando, which is about five hours from Aventura by car. At these resorts, imagination runs rampant and crazy fun and joy rule the day.

Where is the best place to move in Aventura?

Most people who live in Aventura gravitate toward the east side of the city when given a choice. The Highland Lakes area rates highly among visitors, though it sits more inland. As far as living near the beach, Golden Shores and Sunny Isles Beach count among the best options.
