Camden Overview

Camden, NJ is a great place to live and work, and apartments in Camden give you all kinds of options for amenities and things to do. With a history going back more than 150 years and its proximity to so many other places to explore, Camden is the kind of place you can really call home. From quality shopping to excellent medical care, the city and surrounding area really does have it all. Good weather most of the year is another reason people like to make Camden their new place to live.

What is the history of Camden?

Camden was founded in 1828. Since the surrounding Camden County was incorporated in 1844, Camden has served as the county seat. There are over 20 neighborhoods in the city, which prospered as an industrial hub all the way through the Great Depression and WWII. Manufacturing jobs declined steeply after the war, and now the city leans more toward education and medical facilities than any type of industrial plants.

How is the weather in Camden?

The weather in Camden is typical of the Northeast, with cold winters and warm, sometimes humid summers. If you're looking for Camden apartments, it's easier to do that in the warmer months. You can still move in the winter, but you might find that you're dealing with some snow and ice. Still, the weather can be great for skiing, sledding, and other snow-based activities. With all four seasons, you get to experience the beauty of Camden in different types of weather.

How do I get around town?

You really should have a car to get around Camden easily, unless you're right in the downtown area and spend most of your time there. But there are some public transit options. There is one NJ Transit hub in the city, where you can pick up buses from PATCO Speedline, River Line, Greyhound, and the NJ Southern Division. Depending on the bus you choose, you can travel to the Delaware River, around the city, or even to Philadelphia, which is right across the river from Camden.

What is the Camden commute like?

Camden is served by Interstate 676 and US Route 30, which both run through the city to the northern parts of it and beyond. Interstate 76 also passes through the city and joins up with I-676. You can also travel Route 168 in the southern part of Camden, along with county routes 537, 543, 551, and 561, all of which make their way through the city's central areas.

What are the local media outlets?

If you're looking for media outlets to enjoy from apartments in Camden, the Courier Post online serves the area. There are several small newspapers circulating, but most are produced by organizations and thought leaders, as opposed to media companies. Camden doesn't have local TV or radio stations, but there are plenty of nearby options that come in well in the area. You won't be at a loss for something to watch or listen to.

Why live in Camden, NJ?

For anyone thinking about choosing Camden apartments for their next home, the city has so much it can offer to residents. Among the biggest value of the area is its history, but culture plays a close second. There are also great geographic and location features, like being so close to Philadelphia and being near the water, where you can spend those warm summer days fishing, swimming, or boating for enjoyment.

What Camden landmarks should I see?

Camden is home to some great landmarks, including Battleship New Jersey, the Walt Whitman House, Walt Whitman's Tomb, and the Sacred Heart Church. St. Joseph Polish Catholic Church is also well-known for its breathtaking architecture. Rutgers University has a campus in the city, as does Rowan University. There are other colleges and universities that have satellite campuses there, as well.

What is there to do around Camden?

You can find some great things to do all over the Camden area. A lot of people come for the history and landmarks, but others enjoy the Adventure Aquarium, Camden Children's Garden, or the nightlife the city offers. There's also a waterfront pavilion where a lot of concerts take place throughout the warmer months of the year. One of the best things about looking for adventure in the Camden area is that there always a lot of free things to do, so you can explore what interests you.

Any annual festivals or Camden events to know?

The Freedom Festival is held on July 4th in Camden. While the city isn't known for other annual festival opportunities, there are many in the surrounding area. It's easy to travel to festivals throughout the county, and in Philadelphia. The Fall Festival in Mullica Hill and the Italian Market Festival in Philadelphia are both popular with Camden residents. You can also find Mermaids in Camden in February and March.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

The best vacation opportunities near Camden are in two places: the Philadelphia area, or near the water. There are traditional bed-and-breakfast spots, motels, and hotels in both of those areas, as well as Airbnb opportunities, too. Parkertown Beach in Ocean, NJ is around 50 miles away, and can be a great place to spend a vacation that involves sand and surf. By heading into Philadelphia you can also see sights, explore history, and experience all that a larger city has to offer. It's not far to drive, or you can take one of the many buses that travel to and from the city.

Where is the best place to move in Camden?

There are 20 recognized neighborhoods in Camden. Some of these are more popular than others, based on what they have to offer and how close they are to services. Gateway and Parkside are a couple of the best options if you're looking for apartments in Camden. They offer close proximity to everything you want and need, and they generally have updated, quality apartments. But if those aren't the neighborhoods for you, Camden has plenty of other great locations you'll be happy to call home.
