There really aren't a lot of Indonesian restaurants in the US, so for apartment-ites who want try something a little different, Taste of Bali serves up some of the tastiest grub in Columbus. Located in the Northwest neighborhood on Bethel Rd, this restaurant is a little limited in the décor department, but does offer a feast of mouth-watering delights. There are some well-known menu items, such as Teriyaki chicken or red curry (with egg), but much of the fare is fantastically exotic. Try the Empal Gepuk (sweet fried beef) or Rendang (beef in spicy coconut milk). If you're a vegetarian, it's worth trying the Gudeg, which uses a fleshy vegetable called jackfruit. Among appetizers, there's potato pancakes and egg rolls, but the dessert menu is not without its standout items - try the Es Campur, which consists of coconut, avocado, condensed milk, jackfruit and crushed ice. But if you're overwhelmed or it's your first time here, it might be better to try the sampler (with meat or vegetarian options), served compartmentalized-style, much like Japanese Bento Boxes or Indian Thali dishes. Beer and wine are on offer, but you'll want to try the smoothies, authentic Indonesian teas or the Pink Soda - made with rose syrup and sweetened condensed milk. Regardless of what you order, though, the portions are huge, so at the end of your visit, you'll have plenty of yummy leftovers to take back to your apartment.
