Council Bluffs has a long history going back to the early 1800s when Francois Guittar, a businessman from St. Louis, established it as a territory called Traders Point. Iowa became the 29h state in the union in 1846. After that, the territory formerly known as Traders Point was renamed to Kanesville to honor Thomas Kane, who assisted Brigham Young in getting federal permission to use the region as a winter encampment for the Mormons. The town became Council Bluff in 1882 when the majority of the Mormon settlers decided to head west to Utah.

There's the full range of seasons to experience in Council Bluffs, IA. From November to February, it's time to bundle up with daily freezing temperatures ranging between 17°F to 34°F. Although Council Bluffs doesn't operate public transit services directly, there are two fixed-route services through the Transit Authority of the City of Omaha's Metro. The Council Bluff routes go to downtown Omaha, where there are other Metro bus transfer options.

There are three major interstates in the Council Bluffs metropolitan area: I-80, I-29, and I-480. Although there's not as much traffic congestion as in some other metropolitan areas in the US, it can get backed up due to construction and inclement weather. Keep an eye on traffic, road conditions, snow plow activity, and more with 511 on the Go—a Traveler Information APP provided by Iowa's Department of Transportation.

Council Bluffs media outlets include more than a dozen television stations, radio, and both daily and weekly print papers. Tune into WOWT.com, Channel 6, KATV Channel 7, or KMTV Channel 3, for local news, weather, and sports. And, listen to one of the more than 22 radio stations featuring everything from jazz, classic rock, country, Christian music, and more. Additionally, there are three daily papers to choose from: The Daily Nonpareil, The Omaha World-Herald, and The Des Moines Register. Plus, there are two weekly publications, the Midlands Business Journal and Thrifty Nickel Want Ads.
