Oceanside Overview
Oceanside, California offers beautiful weather, six miles of Pacific beaches, interesting annual events, and many opportunities for recreation. Though the city is an increasingly popular vacation destination, there are still plenty of affordable apartments in Oceanside.
What is the history of Oceanside?
Oceanside was officially incorporated in 1888, though the area had been settled before then by a few homesteaders. Since Camp Pendleton opened nearby in 1942, many Marines and their families have moved to the area. The town's different neighborhoods - downtown, south Oceanside, and the areas east of Interstate 5 - were built gradually as the city grew, and have been carefully preserved to maintain their architecture and atmosphere.
How is the weather in Oceanside?
Oceanside has some of the most beautiful weather in southern California. Though it's located to the south of Los Angeles and Orange County, Oceanside receives a steady ocean breeze that keeps the city about ten degrees cooler than its inland neighborhoods. The city receives relatively few rainy days, and typically has low humidity.
How do I get around town?
Oceanside is home to a major train and bus station, the Oceanside Transit Center. This hub connects Amtrak, Metrolink, and commuter rail lines, as well as Greyhound and Breeze busses, and can connect travelers all throughout southern California. The city also isn't too far from the international airports in Los Angeles and Ontario.
What is the Oceanside commute like?
The most important road in Oceanside is Interstate 5, this highway passes all the way through California, north to south, and provides a direct connection to Los Angeles. Other important roads include State Route 78, which runs east-west, and Interstate 15, which is one of the best routes to travel north without passing through Los Angeles.
What are the local media outlets?
Like much of Southern California, most of Oceanside's television, radio, and newspaper options are dominated by Los Angeles. However, there are a few local options, the San Diego Union Tribune publishes a section covering the North County's news, which includes Oceanside, and many of the surrounding towns are home to radio stations.
Why live in Oceanside, CA?
While Oceanside's most famous attractions are its six miles of coastline and gorgeous weather, the city has a lot more to offer. Oceanside has a rich history and many unique public events, including many related to surfing, the ocean, and athletics. Oceanside is also close enough to Carlsbad and Vista to be considered a tri-city area, and it's just a short drive to San Diego or the outdoor recreation of the desert.
What Oceanside landmarks should I see?
Oceanside's beach is home to one of the longest wooden piers on the west coast, the Oceanside Pier. The California Surf Museum is also located within Oceanside. Furthermore, the city is home to Mount Ecclesia, home of the religious Rosicrucian Fellowship which features fascinating architecture and landscaping.
What is there to do around Oceanside?
Oceanside hosts several annual sporting events. Since 2007, the city has hosted the world's largest surf competition for women, the Supergirl Pro Jam, and since 2006 it has served as the starting point for the Race Across America, a 3000-mile bicycle race considered to be one the most difficult challenges in any sport. The city also hosts the annual Beach Soccer Championships, the west coast's largest festival devoted to beach soccer.
Any annual festivals or Oceanside events to know?
Every Thursday evening, Oceanside hosts an event called the Sunset Market in its downtown area. The event includes live music or entertainment, delicious food, and local artists and vendors. Another popular community event is the Turkey Trot, which welcomes nearly 10,000 participants from all across the state and country each Thanksgiving.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?
Oceanside itself is a vacation destination for many people, but it's easy to get out of town in case you get tired of the beach. The city is just a few hours from national forests and parks, and international airports in Los Angeles and Ontario aren't far away. Oceanside is also just a short drive to Mexico.
Where is the best place to move in Oceanside?
Oceanside's most prized real estate is found in its downtown and seaside areas. These areas are closest to the city's many events and include beautiful architecture. Other popular neighborhoods include the south side, which was developed during the interwar years, and the areas east of Interstate 5, which began to develop after World War II. Arrowwood, in the city's northeast section, is home to many military families and includes some of the most affordable apartments in Oceanside.
