Garden City Overview

Garden City ID is a town of 12,000 surrounded on three sides by the city of Boise. People who live in Garden City apartments enjoy the amenities of Boise as well as the small-town feel of Garden City itself. Garden City is situated in the beautiful Treasure Valley and offers the natural grandeur of Idaho with walking trails, parks and the Boise River. Though the town is just over four square miles, it hosts a thriving art scene, and it’s famous for its numerous craft breweries, wineries and cideries.

What is the history of Garden City?

Before the Europeans came, indigenous people made seasonal encampments in Garden City’s valley. Explorers, trappers, and Oregon Trail pilgrims came through during the 19th century, and the area also boomed during an 1860s gold rush. The town gets its name from gardens tended by Chinese immigrants who later lived in the area. In 1949, Ada County approved the incorporation of Garden City as a village. In its early years of incorporation, it was a haven for gambling, which had been outlawed in neighboring Boise. Restaurants, bars and other businesses followed the gambling houses, and eventually Garden City became a more residential community while retaining a vibrant hospitality industry.

How is the weather in Garden City?

Summers are short, dry and sunny, and the winters are cold, snowy and overcast. However, the annual average snowfall is less than some might expect at around 18 inches. There’s also quite a bit of rain in the winter months. Over the seasons, temperatures generally fluctuate between the 20s and the 90s. June through September is the ideal time for warm-weather activities.

How do I get around town?

Valley Regional Transit (VRT) runs a fixed-route bus system throughout the Boise area, including Garden City. VRT also maintains paratransit special services and allows seniors to reserve rides. However, Garden City apartment residents can often skip the bus and leave their cars at home. An extensive system of bicycle and hiking paths serves the city, and any place in town is within easy access of the scenic Boise River. Nearby Boise Airport services the Treasure Valley. At one time, there was Amtrak service to Boise, and there’s an effort underway to reestablish it.

What is the Garden City commute like?

Garden City is located just north of I-84, and U.S. Route 26 runs lengthwise through the town near its southwest border, more or less parallel to the Bose River. Idaho State 44 transits the north border. Chinden Avenue, named after the Chinese gardens that once graced the area, is a major Garden City business street. The Boise area has surprisingly difficult traffic for a city its size. Even though the metro area population is not large, it’s compressed into a small area.

What are the local media outlets?

The local newspaper is the Idaho Statesman. It serves Boise, Garden City, Ada County and all of the Treasure Valley and the surrounding area. There are public radio stations affiliated with Boise State University. There is a news station and a music station. Other local radio stations play a variety of music including rock, country, soft adult contemporary, hip-hop and R&B. CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox have TV affiliates in Boise, and there’s an Idaho Public TV station in Boise as well.

Why live in Garden City, ID?

If you love nature and the outdoors, this is a great place for you. In any Garden City apartment, you’re within a mile of the scenic, wooded Boise River. The Treasure Valley is a haven for all sorts of outdoor recreation, including hiking, fishing, boating, cycling and camping. The town is part of a metro area with the feel of being an oasis within it. You can enjoy all Boise has to offer, yet right within Garden City there are marketplaces, concerts, festivals and of course a great variety of places to eat, drink and meet people.

What Garden City landmarks should I see?

There’s no bigger attraction in town than the Boise River and Greenbelt, a 20-mile system of waterside trails. These paths are free of motor traffic and pass through parks with abundant wildlife. The Garden City Artisan Pathway is a self-guided route that takes you to many of the local artists. The Western Idaho Fairgrounds are near the river, and adjacent is Memorial Stadium, home of the minor league baseball team, the Boise Hawks.

What is there to do around Garden City?

Whether you prefer indoor or outdoor activities, Garden City has something for you. There’s the Greenbelt path along the river and a 1.5-mile nature path north of the Boise. The River Club, once known as the Plantation Country Club, is one of the oldest golf courses in Idaho. Visitors and Garden City apartment dwellers alike enjoy the cluster of beer and wine tasting rooms along Chinden Avenue. Then there’s the art scene, remarkable for a community this size. There are visual artists, performing artists, artisans and craftspeople.

Any annual festivals or Garden City events to know?

The Western Idaho Fair, held in August and including 4-H competitions, bake-offs and popular fried foods, is the biggest and most popular fair in Idaho. The local wineries and breweries like to celebrate the day that the 21st amendment was added to the constitution, ending the prohibition era. The Boise Music Fest is a one-day summer event in Garden City that includes national acts plus about 50 local artists. It features not only music such as rock, hip-hop and country, but also food vendors, carnival rides and children’s activities.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

In Garden City, you can take a vacation and stay right at home. From most Garden City apartments, you have to travel only a few blocks to cast a fishing line in the Boise River, a fishery stocked with whitefish and trout. The 7,000+ foot Bogus Basin Ski Resort is only about 20 miles away. But if you want to get out and about, you have the entire state of Idaho as your vacation playground. The state boasts 28 state parks, 25,000+ miles of hiking and backpacking trails and 3,000+ miles of whitewater. At Craters of the Moon, you can walk over hardened lava and explore an underground lava tube. Bruneau Dunes State Park has the tallest freestanding dunes in North America at 470 feet.

Where is the best place to move in Garden City?

No matter where your Garden City apartment is, it’s in a pleasant neighborhood and close to lots of amenities. After all, this town of 12,000 is only about four square miles, being six miles long and up to a mile and a half wide. The Waterfront District is within easy walking and biking distance of the parks and shops in the downtown area. Parkway Station is right in the midst of all the downtown activity. Fairview Acres has many older homes yet continues to be a fast-growing area in the town’s Live/Work/Create district. One glance at a map shows you how close to the action any Garden City apartment is.
