Medford Overview
Medford, MA is located just a few miles to the northwest of Boston. In fact, Medford may just be the most popular of that metro's suburbs for those who want to be close to the city but enjoy a more suburban and even, in some places, rural lifestyle. That's because those living in Medford apartments and homes are often just blocks away from fantastic outdoor havens like Middlesex Fells Reservation. This city is also renowned for being home to the prestigious Tufts University and premier arts avenues like Chevalier Theatre.á
What is the history of Medford?
Medford is one of the oldest cities in the United States having been settled by English colonists back in 1630. Back then, Medford was attached to Charlestown as part of the larger Massachusetts Bay Colony. The community finally became its own city in 1754 and grew to an impressive (for the day) population of 1,114. Of course, that still pales in comparison to its latest population count of 57,341. Everyone is searching for apartments in Medford thanks to its beauty, history, and proximity to Boston and all the lifestyle, education, and career opportunities the area has to offer.
How is the weather in Medford?
Medford, MA enjoys your typically Northeastern weather. What does that mean? It means that those who live here enjoy warm, sunnyásummers and cold, wet winters. Generally, winters are fairly mild, with the weather rarely dropping below 10 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes Medford, MA an ideal choice for those who hate the extreme cold but still want to be close to winter activities, such as skiing at the Blue Hills Ski Area 40 miles away. But best of all, the warm summers that average in the 80s Fahrenheit are perfect for swimming at the in-town Mystic Lakes State Park.
How do I get around town?
As with all the biggest Northeastern cities, Medford, MA is very public transit-friendly. This city is connected with the greater Boston metro area and has bus, train, and subway stops as part of the Orange and Red Lines. This is important as most people who live in Medford commute to somewhere outside the city, either by public transit or by car. The average Medford resident spends about 33 minutes of every day commuting to work. That said, Medford, MA itself is very pedestrian-friendly and one can easily live in Medford apartments and never own a car.á
What is the Medford commute like?
While you don't needáa car, you certainly can have one and enjoy easier access to work and social activities throughout the greater metro area and the region at large. Highway 60 cuts right through the west-east heart of Medford with the Northern Expressway (or I-93) serving as a north-south conduit. The Northern Expressway goes directly into downtown Boston and can be taken to continue on further south to Providence, RI, or taken north to Manchester, NH.á
What are the local media outlets?
Medford, MA once had its own independent five-day daily newspaper that covered specifically the events of the city. Unfortunately, that newspaper ended its publication in 2017. Today, local events and activities can be read about in larger Boston newspapers like the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald. But while the city doesn't have its own major media outlets, the onsite Tufts University does. Tufts University operates both a popular student newspaper called Tufts Daily and a very popular student and community freeform radio station, WMFO. WMFO operates on the 91.5 MHz FM band and boasts a diverse schedule that includes music (both mainstream and local), interviews, and much more.á
Why live in Medford, MA?
Medford apartments and homes are quite possibly the best places to live for those individuals who love the outdoors but also want to be close to city amenities for work and play. That's because, while downtown Medford, MA is less than five miles from downtown Boston (yes, really!), it's also mere minutes from some of the area's greatest outdoor spaces. Just a few blocks north of downtown Medford, MA is the incredible Middlesex Fells Reservation, a verifiable natural haven that features thousands of acres of hiking and biking trails, swimming lakes, and much more.á
What Medford landmarks should I see?
The city of Medford, MA is perhaps best well known for the prestigious Tufts University, but that isn't the only landmark of note. There is, of course, the aforementioned Middlesex Fells Reservation and even those with only a few minutes to spare will enjoy hiking up the Wright's Tower which provides fantastic views of the park to the north and city to the south. For those who enjoy more cultured pursuits, head to the downtown Chevalier Theatre. This Medford concert hall seats 1,900 people and is renowned for providing an array of acts including local and national bands, plays, comedians, and other live performers and performances.áá
What is there to do around Medford?

There's also the on-campus Distler Performance Hall that is great for acoustic concerts and Regent Theatre that straddles the border of Medford and Arlington.áIf you love the outdoors, Middlesex Fells is only one of several fantastic outdoor spaces in the city's borders.
