Sandusky Overview

Every year, more and more people are making the choice to check out Sandusky apartments. With close vacation spots, restaurants, and local bars, it's easy to see why this is becoming a growing city. Enjoy the great lakes, take a tour of the local historical sites, or jet across the state line into Michigan for a weekend getaway. No matter what you decide to do, apartments in Sandusky will offer you a location that is perfect for getting around town or to work.

What is the history of Sandusky?

Sandusky, which was originally called Portland, was founded in 1817 as the county seat for Erie County. Within 30 years it had a population of over 3,000 residents and a growing economic system. As a major exporter, Sandusky continued to see huge economic gain throughout the 1800s. Unfortunately with the invention of the automobile came a decline in the necessity to use Sandusky for shipping purposes and by the early 20th century it saw its economy start to weaken. Sandusky was also a popular stop on the Underground Railroad, where residents would help sneak victims out of the United States and into neighboring Canada.

How is the weather in Sandusky?

The most comfortable time for those living in apartments in Sandusky is going to be in late spring and late summer. Average temperatures during these times rarely reach over 80 degrees but stay warm enough to be comfortable. Winters can be slightly harsher on the Lake Erie shoreline, with lows in the 20s and 30s. It has average precipitation levels, with 33 inches of rain annually and 16 inches of snow in the winter.

How do I get around town?

Transportation is made easy for residents living in Sandusky apartments. Inexpensive bus fare is one of the most notable benefits of the Sandusky Transit System. Purchasing a transfer pass also allows for free transfers from bus to bus. For those who are interested in rideshares, the transit system has made these available as well. A driver can get you where you need to go as long as you are going the same direction, at the same time, as the other individuals needing a ride. The community has recognized the need for the disabled to get where they need to go, which is why they have implemented a paratransit system and given a half-price rate to the elderly and disabled.

What is the Sandusky commute like?

The major highways traveling through Sandusky are Ohio State Route 101 and State Route 18. Commuting is simplified with the help of the Sandusky Transit System, but if you need to drive the traffic generally remains light to moderate. Average commute times around the area are under 20 minutes, making it an ideal city for professionals to settle down in.

What are the local media outlets?

Keeping up with day to day events is easy in Sandusky. The major news channels are Fox8 and News5, which both serve Erie County. Residents who still utilize black and white newspaper can have the Sandusky Register delivered to their home or, if you are reducing your paper waste, you can tune into a number of radio stations. The main talk radio station in Sandusky is 1450 AM. Is music more your speed? Stations 98.5 for classic rock and 96.1 for Country music are popular choices for residents here.

Why live in Sandusky, OH?

This is a family-focused town, which is full of various activities as well as restaurants and bars to visit. No matter what season it is, there is always something to do and see. And if work is your primary concern, you won't have to worry about wading through traffic to get to the office every day.

What Sandusky landmarks should I see?
