Skokie Overview

Skokie on the surface may seem like just another Chicago suburb, but in truth, this village is a booming city in its own right. Skokie is an active community with a long list of festivals, concerts, and athletic events on its calendar. It is also a city where people can readily get involved and take advantage of public spaces like its hundreds of acres of parks and biking trails. You also can't beat Skokie's convenient access along Interstate 94 and its superb array of shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. If you've been looking around for a place near Chicago to live, then continue reading to learn why it might just be time to zero in and start researching for apartments in Skokie, IL.

What is the history of Skokie?

Today, the ten square miles that is Skokie consists of beautifully manicured neighborhoods and bustling shopping centers. But that wasn't always the case. Just two centuries ago, the area that is now Skokie was known as a land of swamp and forests, a place where early French and British explorers traded with American Indians. Those explorers made way for colonists who settled the land and started making the changes that would transform the area into the Skokie we know today.

How is the weather in Skokie?

Skokie, IL features a typical Midwestern climate. This means a full four seasons -- rainy springs, warm and humid summers, chilly autumns, and snow-filled winters. That said, Skokie's proximity to Lake Michigan means that it won't get quite as many blizzards and ice storms as cities in other parts of Illinois.

How do I get around town?

Located less than fifteen miles northwest of Chicago, Skokie offers a perfect home base for those who commute into the city. If you prefer driving, the easy grid layout of the city makes it easy to get around town or go beyond it. If you want to nix car payments, insurance, and fuel costs, then ditch the car and appreciate this community's great walkability and easy access to public transit. During warmer months, you'll often see people using regional trails like the Cook County Forest Preserve Bike Path and the North Shore Channel Trail to get to where they're going in a more relaxed and outdoorsy manner.

What is the Skokie commute like?

It's easy both to get around Skokie and to get out of it. Interstate 94 (known locally as Edens Expressway) runs along the western end of the city while US Highway cuts across to the south. Skokie is also served by Chicago's Yellow Line, Greyhound, and Pace bus routes.

What are the local media outlets?

Skokie doesn't have any big media outlets, but its close proximity to Chicago means that residents enjoy some of the most well-known entertainment and media groups in the world. From the Chicago Tribute to The Onion, Chicago is headquarters to a great variety of news and media outfits. In terms of radio and television, when you live in Skokie, you can choose from thousands of quality options that are created and broadcasted within miles of your home. For those who prefer their entertainment up close and personal, consider catching a show at the Skokie Theater or North Shore Center for the Performing Arts.

Why live in Skokie, IL?

There are a lot of reasons to choose Skokie as your address. If you're a college student or young professional, then you'll love the affordability of this village paired with its fast, convenient access to Chicago. If you're a parent or interested in becoming one, then you'll love this area's highly ranked school system, gorgeous parks, and array of shopping opportunities. Older adults are likely to love taking advantage of the community's outstanding healthcare organizations and its over 248 acres of parkland. Finally, residents of all ages are sure to appreciate this village's fantastic safety record.

What Skokie landmarks should I see?

There are several key landmarks of note nestled within Skokie. For example, just to the north of Main St. is the Evanston Golf Club while the gorgeous Emily Oaks Nature Center is situated just a few blocks south. Two key cultural landmarks in Skokie include the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts and the Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park. This latter landmark features over 70 sculptures throughout its open-air exhibit spanning two miles and offering convenient access to city and regional bike and pedestrian paths.

What is there to do around Skokie?

Describing Skokie as a suburb is accurate, but suburbs aren't the boring blocks of matching row homes that they used to be known for. There's plenty in this village to keep residents interested and attract tourists in -- and that goes beyond the landmarks we've already listed. For example, Skokie's very popular Westfield Old Orchard is a gorgeous outdoor mall that boasts over 100 specialty shops amidst beautiful gardens and landscaped walkways. Or there's The Exploritorium that's ideal for families who need to entertain the kids and was even recently named Best Rainy Day Activity Site by Chicago Magazine. Here, kids and adults can explore the location's many interactive activities including diy musical instruments and a make-believe costume dress-up area. Another unique thing about Skokie is the diverse ethnicity of its residents which has translated to a diverse array of dining options. Russian, Mexican, classic Italian, and Southeast Asian cuisines are all readily found in this Illinois city.

Any annual festivals or Skokie events to know?

At last count, Skokie boasted over 63,000 residents and this village certainly knows how to keep them entertained. Every year, the spring Skokie Festival of Cultures kicks off an exciting series of festivals. There's the North Shore Art Festival boasting high-end art, the North Shore Affordable Art sale that features a more diverse array of art, the music lovers's three-day Backlot Bash, and a long list of other festivities that bring in vendors, entertainers, artists, and other types of guests from around the region.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

The most obvious nearby vacation spot is Chicago and its many, many big-city attractions. Chicago is, after all, the third-largest city in the country and it has all of the entertainment and cultural amenities you'd expect out of such a world-class city. But if cities aren't your scene, then consider taking a ferry across or a drive around Lake Michigan to northern Michigan. There, you'll find the Huron-Manistee National Forests and its many exciting outdoor activities. For a quick day trip out of the city, head north on

Where is the best place to move in Skokie?

Skokie is a fairly big village and thus offers new residents a lot of different areas of town to live in. If you're coming into town in order to be near Oakton Community College, then you might look at some of the apartments along Stoke Blvd. between Main Street and Lincoln Avenue. This area offers close walking access to the school, the Emily Oaks Nature Center, and great stores like ALDI and the Crafty Beaver Home Center. Or if you want to be close to a greater mix of shops, restaurants, parks, and have easy access to I-94, then you might prefer looking at apartments at the city's northside. Apartments here also are close to the Cook County Forest Preserve Bike Path that offers a nice winding country trail that can make you feel like you're in the middle of the country and not the suburbs.
