Sugar Land Overview

Situated within Fort Bend County in the great Houston area of the welcoming arms of the Lone Star State, Sugar Land is an exceptional place to call home. One of the fastest-growing municipalities in all of Texas, this luxury-laden hot spot is in-demand and shows little signs of slowing its appeal anytime soon.

What is the history of Sugar Land?

Home base of Imperial Sugar, this fledgling city has its roots based in the manufacturing of the sweet ingredient. A plantation and then refinery helped establish an economic base in the area as far back as 1879, and the train route that cuts through the city remains one of the oldest in the entire state. Sugar Land saw an official incorporation in the 1950s, and the addition of subdivisions in the 1970s spurred even more population growth. Currently boasting a population of over 50,000, this affluent Texas locale is a go-to destination for those working in the oil trade as well as other large industry.

How is the weather in Sugar Land?

Cowboy hats are always in vogue, partially out of fashion sense and equally out of necessity. Simply put, Texas (especially in the Houston area) gets pretty hot and humid in the summertime, and those residing in apartments in Sugar Land can expect lengthy heat waves from May until September. Winters are mild, with snow a rarity, and spring rains can yield humidity.

How do I get around town?

While mass transit is lacking in Sugar Land proper, rumors continue to float that Sugar Land may soon see expansion of a commuter rail system from Houston. Still, the train currently is not in service, with most residents relying upon one or more personal automobiles to get around. The Bush Intercontinental Airport and Hobby Airport handle most typical flight needs, although there is a regional airport that also handles around 250 smaller flights per day.

What is the Sugar Land commute like?

Interstate 69/59 is far and away the most utilized roadway in the area, boasting eight lanes at some points and handling the majority of commuter traffic coming to and from Houston. Highway 6 and U.S. 90 are alternatives, although regardless of what path Sugar Land residents decide upon traffic should be anticipated. Those commuting to Houston can expect daily delays during peak hours.

What are the local media outlets?

The 'Houston Chronicle' and the 'Houston Press' both offer extensive coverage of the Sugar Land region, with Public Access 16 offering broadcasting of area events such as city council meetings. Comcast services much of the television needs of those residing in Sugar Land rentals, and radio is robust, with genres such as blues, country and classic rock dominating the airwaves.

From world class restaurants to high end retail stores, this diamond in the not-so-rough offers much in the way of nearby amenities and prosperity. With a higher-than-average median income typical among residents, Sugar Land lives up to its name easily for those truly wondering how sweet it is.

The Sugar Land Ice Center is the place to be for skating events and family fun, while a recent 2016 statue installation can be found covering much of the downtown scene. Lakeview Auditorium is one of the oldest structures in the entire city, and the famed Imperial Sugar Company sign still holds sway since it was first installed in 1912.
