Founded in 1855, it was originally named West Urbana, but after the railroad company laid down two mile of tracks, the city obtained a city charter and was renamed after a county in Ohio, called Champaign.

Champaign has a humid continental climate, which means it can be hot, humid in the summer, and extremely cold in the winter months. Usually rainfall is distributed evenly throughout the year. The temperature for spring ranges between the high of 73 °F to the low of 30 °F, while Summer temperatures average high of 85 °F to the low of 60 °F. The temperature for fall lands between the high of 77 °F to the low of 32°F and Winter months see temperatures ranging from the high of 61 °F to the low of 18 °F.

How do I get around town?

Since Champaign is known as a campus town, wearing comfortable shoes for walking is necessary. Biking is also very popular around town and on campus. For those who want to sit back and relax, while getting to their destination, you have another option, the Champaign-Urbana Transit bus service. There is also Amtrak service, Greyhound Lines and Willard Airport, which has daily flights to O’Hare Airport in Chicago.

One of the major Interstates in Champaign is I-57, it happens to be the longest highways in Illinois. It bypass Champaign, meeting up with the other two major highways serving Champaign - I-72 and I-74. US Route 45 and 150, along with Illinois State Route 10 are connected in traveling through Champaign-Urbana.

The days include hosting films and lively discussions. Lincoln the Lawyer, is a bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln unveiled in July 3, 1927. It stands in the entrance of Carle Park and depicts a young Lincoln as a circuit lawyer. Both of these items are listed with the National Register of Historic Places.

Exhibits including Ancient Egyptian, African Art, Greek pottery, sculptures, as well as photographs are just a tip of the iceberg in what this homey museum have available for viewing. The Taste of Champaign-Urbana is an outdoor summer festival, held annually in lovely West Side Park. Singing artists in the entertainment field, along with artisans, craftspeople and the 3.14 “pie” run is a part of the day’s festivities. Parade of Lights, issues in the holiday season with floats, marching bands, free hot chocolate and the big guy himself, it all culminate to the lighting of the city’s Christmas Tree in the plaza.

You do not have to go far to your vacation spot, because it Urbana! Less than two miles away, you can check out Lincoln’s Square. There you will enjoy the produce the Farmer’s Market features every May to November. Sweet corn, tomatoes, watermelon, and lettuce are a few of the items they bring in fresh from their fields every Saturday.
