All sorts of art that you might, or might not, want in your Colorado Springs apartment can be found at the Taylor Museum at the Fine Arts Center of Colorado Springs. New, special exhibits, Native American art, Hispanic art, Latin American art, modern American art and Tactile art are displayed in a gallery comprising over 130,000 square feet. Here in the Taylor Museum some incredible pieces that have not been on public display for many years. The collection at the museum is considered to be one of the finest of American art in the country. All types of media are displayed here, from the 19th to the 21st century, from Latin America to the United States. Artifacts and jewelry, Santos from the Southwest US, weavings, pottery, paintings and textiles make up the majority of the pieces. Modern works from the Broadmoor Academy are displayed here, as well as painted art and photography by some of the leading advocates of modern art. A Dale Chihuly glass collection, one of the largest in the world, is here, and includes the historic nine-foot Orange Hornet Chandelier. The museum was founded in 1936 by Alice Bemis Taylor, and the original museum building was designed by New Mexican architect John Gaw Meem. Just recently the museum had an addition completed, designed by recognized architect David Owen Tryba. Nine permanent collection galleries, two traveling exposition galleries, and an extraordinary tactile gallery are included in the addition. It meshes well with the original architecture built in the late thirties. The intent of the founder of the museum was to educate the public about the breadth of artistic expressions in the Americas. A world renowned permanent collection, vibrant exhibitions from around the world, and related cultural and innovative programs are all featured. Tours may be arranged for you and a classroom of art students, employees of a business interested in getting some "culture," or just you and your buddies at your Colorado Springs apartment complex. Just call the tour coordinator at Bemis School of Art at 719-477-4345 to learn more about the history, architecture, permanent collection, current exhibitions and theatre of the Fine Art Center. Admission price is $10, and $8.50 for seniors and students. Children under 4 are free. Museum hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm.
