The area was first settled in 1769, when the Portola Expedition made it through Sepulveda Pass and ended up in the area of Los Encinos State Historic Park. In 1849, Rancho Los Encinos was established after Governor Pio Pico awarded the parcel of land to three Mission Indians, the indigenous people of California. Parts of the old ranch have been preserved in the State Historic Park.

The weather in Encino is moderate, with the average temperature the highest in August at 72.5 degrees. The lowest average temperature is seen in December, when the average temperature goes down to 57 degrees. January is the rainiest month, where it will rain roughly 3 1/2 inches throughout the month. The average rainfall from June through August is minimal, where it almost never rains during these months. If you love cool nights and warm days, the weather in Encino is nearly perfect for you throughout the year.

If you live in Encino, owning a car is the best way to get around the area. The city has a small town feel, and many parts of the city are moderately rural areas with minimal public transportation access. You will need a car for most of your errands, although there are shuttles specifically for the seniors in the area to get to local establishments. Bike lanes are sparse in Encino, and it is best to drive a car instead.

What is the Encino commute like?

If you are a commuter to West LA coming from Encino, you can either drive on the 405, or take the Orange Line, which passes through Encino on the way to North Hollywood. Traffic can be tough during rush hour on the 405, and many residents choose to commute on the Orange Line instead. It's possible to live in Encino and work there, as it is an affluent area with many amenities and private schools. Your commute may be minimal when you work in the city.

Radio stations in Encino include KCSN 88.5 FM, LA Talk Radio, and KCAA Los Angeles studio. 93.5 KDAY FMis a popular radio station for pop music lovers. For Encino news, residents turn to ABC 7 out of Los Angeles, KCBS, or KNBC. Newspapers in the city include the Encino Enterprise, which publishes twice a month. It is part of the Valley News Group, which also publishes Valley Vantage, Warner Center News, and Las Virgenes and Calabasas Enterprise.
