Fairfield Overview

Fairfield, CA has historically been tied to local farming communities. Now, it keeps its small-town heritage while still offering plenty of amenities for locals and tourists alike. Fairfield has robust schools, green city parks, varied shopping districts, a vibrant ethnic cuisine scene, and numerous wineries in and around the area. This town has a lot to offer families and singles just starting out who want a more affordable place to live near San Francisco.

What is the history of Fairfield?

In 1810 the Spanish army attacked (and later allied with) the Suisun Indians. Later on in 1837, Chief Solano received a Mexican land grant for the area. Robert Waterman, a ship captain from Fairfield, Connecticut, ended up with the grant. He parceled out Fairfield in the 1850s and it incorporated in 1903.

How is the weather in Fairfield?

Fairfield's winters are mild with temperatures about 55/40 and rarely freezing. Winter also brings the year's rainiest months. In spring, the temperature climbs to 65-75 degree days and about 45 at night. Summers are around 90/55 and dry. Things cool down in the fall, dropping from 85/55 to 65/45 over a few short months.

How do I get around town?

You can get around town by car, but it's not strictly necessary. Fairfield offers both bike lanes and a variety of public transportation options to choose from. These include vanpools, park-and-ride, and twelve local and commuter bus routes via FAST (Fairfield and Suisun Transit). You can use Amtrak via the Fairfield-Vacaville railroad station.

What is the Fairfield commute like?

You can get to both San Francisco and Sacramento via I-80. If you want to head south, I-680 leads to San Jose. The most direct way to see Napa is probably via State Route 12. Traffic is an issue, particularly during rush hour, so plan enough time for your commute.

What are the local media outlets?

Get your news in printed form through the Daily Republic, Fairfield's newspaper. For news on TV, check out CBS (channel 5), Fox (channel 2) or PBS (channel 6). The city also has a lively radio scene. Some popular stations include KPFA public radio (94.1 FM) and KMVQ top-40 (99.7 FM).

Why live in Fairfield, CA?

The Bay Area is famous for the sea, a melting pot of cultures, Napa Valley ... and a high cost of living. Apartments in Fairfield bucks this trend with a friendly atmosphere and multiple affordable units to choose from. The town is safe and peaceful, and if you long for big city life you just have to hop onto the highway. The highlights of San Francisco, Santa Rosa, and Oakland are all within commuting distance. This town is well placed to set down roots while working in another area, and this is well served by a dynamic school system.

What Fairfield landmarks should I see?

The whimsical Grape Crusher statue is popular with selfie-takers and sunset-watchers. History buffs may enjoy a trip through time at the Napa Valley Model Rail. Here you can virtually walk the route of the Napa Valley Northern Railroad. Finally, the striking Benicia Clock Tower is a popular site for weddings and receptions.

What is there to do around Fairfield?

Love museums? Check out the Travis Air Force Base Heritage Center. This museum lets you explore the base's history and view over 35 display aircraft. You can also take a tour of the town's Jelly Belly factory. Finally, work off that sugar with a stroll around the Glasshoff Sculpture Ranch.

Any annual festivals or Fairfield events to know?

The Bay Area has a lively calendar of events. Prefer not to commute out of town? Check out Fairfield's Tomato & Vine festival, an August highlight with cooking competitions celebrating all things tomato. A sweet alternative is Fairfield's Candy Palooza, held in September at the local Jelly Belly candy factory.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Fairfield itself has Butler Amusements Inc, a traditional amusement park including ferris wheel. You're also a quick drive away from Napa Valley's world famous wine country. Active families with kids may enjoy a day trip to nearby Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. Drive a little farther west and you'll hit Port Reyes National Seashore.

Where is the best place to move in Fairfield?

Fairfield is one of the more affordable towns in the Bay area. Growing families can set down roots near the schools in the vicinity of Travis Air Force Base or in the Bransford Circuit area. If you love golf, consider an apartment by the Paradise Valley country club. This has a golf course and numerous amenities for members. Fairfield's shopping scene is centered around the mall. The older parts of town (east of Interstate 80) have generally lower price points for apartments. If you're eco-minded, consider living in Green Valley. This area has roots with old Suisun farming communities and includes microbreweries, wineries, and numerous farm to table businesses. If green spaces are important to you, living near Rockford Hills Regional Park offers hiking, biking, and stunning mountain views.
