Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area of Burnsville was inhabited by Dakota Native Americans. Then, in the middle of the 18th century, European settlers began to arrive for the first time. Following the American Revolution, the United States began to expand westward quickly and started acquiring territory in the area. The first major American settlements in the area began to develop in the middle of the 19th century, around the same time as the Civil War was going on. The area continued to grow during the Industrial Revolution, but there was not a major housing boom until the end of the Second World War.
