Minneapolis Overview

Where the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers meet, sits Minneapolis and its sister city Saint Paul. With Minneapolis having the largest population in the state and Saint Paul being the capital, these Twin Cities form the second-largest economic center of the Midwest. The area is surrounded by scenic water parks, including rivers, lakes, wetlands, and waterfalls, making it the perfect city for watersport fans. Connected by the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway, these green spaces link together through seven districts around the city. Minneapolis is also considered a global city and a significant contributor to the world economy. With the fifth-highest number of Fortune 500 companies in the country, apartments in Minneapolis are perfect for young professionals to live.

What is the history of Minneapolis?

This river area was home to the Dakota Sioux until French explorers arrived in 1680. The city’s first schoolteacher created the name by combining the Sioux word for water (mni) and the Greek word for city (polis). Through the early 1900s, the many lumber and flour mills were powered by Saint Anthony Falls, the Mississippi River’s tallest waterfall. This led to the city becoming known as the greatest direct-drive water powered center in history.

How is the weather in Minneapolis?

Minneapolis has a humid continental climate which consists of large seasonal temperature fluctuations, with hot summers and severely cold winters. Precipitation occurs throughout the year, with the summer months receiving more than four inches per month. During the winter months, up to a foot of snow is common. Minneapolis receives an average of 58% sunshine annually, with summer temperatures reaching the low 90 degrees F and winter temperatures dipping well below freezing at times.

How do I get around town?

Half of the area residents work downtown. Sixty percent of those people drive cars and the rest commute by train, bus, or bike. The METRO Blue light rail system connects downtown Minneapolis with the Mall of America, and the METRO Green travels between the Twin Cities. The bus and rail schedules are coordinated, so it a convenient way to travel around the city. Minneapolis is also a top bicycle city with an extensive system of trails, dedicated bike lanes, and bike racks on buses and trains. The Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport sits on the southeast border of the city.

What is the Minneapolis commute like?

Interstate 94 travels through Minneapolis from Fargo, North Dakota to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Interstate 35 also crosses through the city, connecting Duluth, Minnesota to Des Moines, Iowa. This gives travelers easy access to the major cities of the northern Midwest area. Travel between the Twin Cities takes approximately 20 minutes on I-94 or navigating the downtown areas on I-35W/E and surface streets. Traffic congestion is not too extreme, with delays increasing during the winter months.

What are the local media outlets?

The Star Tribune is the daily newspaper and City Pages publishes a weekly lifestyle paper. Minnesota Public Radio is popular, and an active music scene supports a broad range of music stations. The local news is broadcast from CBS affiliate WCCO-TV from downtown Minneapolis.

Why live in Minneapolis, MN?

The Twin Cities are considered the Midwest’s cultural capital with more than 60 museums, 30 stage theaters, and ten dance companies. With unique attractions, world-class dining, and miles of green spaces, it has the best of two cities for the price of one. With nearly two dozen Fortune 500 companies calling Minneapolis home, such as UnitedHealth Group, Target, and Best Buy, the local economy continues to grow. No sales tax on clothing makes shopping at the Mall of America, the largest mall in the country, that much better.

What Minneapolis landmarks should I see?

The Minneapolis Skyway System is an extensive collection of enclosed pedestrian footbridges that connect the downtown buildings. Nearly 11 miles of interlinked bridges allow for year-round walking and unique views of the city. The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is a favorite landmark park area featuring more than 40 outdoor art pieces, including the iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry. The University of Minnesota is the major college system in Minneapolis and the fourth largest campus in the country.

What is there to do around Minneapolis?

The Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway is one of the longest systems of continuous public urban parkways in the country. With 50 miles of parks, 51 miles of walking/biking paths, and 102 miles of trails, there are endless outdoor activities to enjoy. The city offers a vast array of world-class entertainment, including Broadway hits at the Orpheum Theatre, classical performances at the Minnesota Orchestra, and Shakespearean productions at the Guthrie Theater.

Any annual festivals or Minneapolis events to know?

During the warmer months, outdoor festivals are plentiful as most people take advantage of the pleasant weather conditions. The Festival of Nations in May features authentic food and traditional entertainment from nearly 100 community ethnic groups. The Uptown Art Fair in August features local artists, street food, and local music. The summer season comes to an end in September with carnival rides, animal exhibits, and local competitions at the Minnesota State Fair.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Due to its central location and easy access to the Interstates, there are plenty of nearby attractions to visit outside of the city. Just two hours north is Duluth, Minnesota, and the Superior National Forest. A half a day’s drive southeast takes you to Chicago, or head up north to visit Winnipeg, Canada.

Where is the best place to move in Minneapolis?

Minneapolis is an exciting city that has something for everyone. Whether you are a single professional who wants to live in the heart of downtown, or a family looking for a quiet neighborhood near the city, there are apartments in Minneapolis that meet your needs. For hipsters or the young at heart, the Northeast neighborhood is a hotspot for creative types who are looking for casual atmospheres, charming architecture, and affordable rent. For families searching for top schools in the area, Edina offers suburban living close to the city for those who can afford the higher prices. Just south of the University of Minnesota is Longfellow, a quaint residential area with Minneapolis apartments that are near downtown and a short walk to the Mississippi River.

Stephanie4+ years in Minneapolis

February 25, 2025

A dream city for outdoorsy types who crave an urban experience...there's nothing like a day at the lakes or hitting up the Grand Rounds. Add amazing theater (like the Guthre) and restaurants and you have the perfect urban (but not too urban) lifestyle. The cost of living is going up but still pretty reasonable compared to most cities of a similar size and with similar cultural opportunities.
