The Denver Public Library is more than just a place to check out books, DVDs and magazines: it's a public space for those in need of education, enlightenment, and even entertainment. It's a place where the public can come, in times of need, and find solutions to their problems, or come to term with the issues surrounding our busy and dangerous world. A city without a library is hardly a city at all, so the Denver Public Library plays a very big role in making Denver one of the top cities in the nation. With nearly two and a half million items in their collection, and with nearly ten million items being checked out every year, the Denver Public Library is a very popular location, especially when you consider that Denver's population is only about 600 thousand. They also have almost 19 thousand reading programs for kids, and every year 30 thousand people take part in their summer reading program.79 percent of Denverites hold library cards at this point, and the popularity of the library is growing at alarming speed. The library holds most of the classic and modern favorites that you'd expect them to have, as well as a large number of DVDs, magazines and newspapers, but what really makes them special is their special catalogs. They host a collection of Western History and Genealogy, including careful info on buildings and neighborhoods in Denver, plenty of genealogy charts for those wishing to follow their family lines, as well as info on the famed 10th Mountain Division, a group of ski troops which made their names known during World War II. They're also famous for their African American Research Library, a location focusing on the history, literature, art and music of the African American population. For those looking for some education and enlightenment, never fear.
