Englewood Overview

Englewood offers a comfortable suburban lifestyle near the center of the universe in NYC.  Englewood, New Jersey is an affluent small town of 29,000 people located in the outer New York City metro area. It’s nestled in the rolling hills across the Hudson River from the Bronx, NY. The town is bordered by the upscale Englewood Cliffs as well as Bergenfield, Leonia, and Fort Lee. Englewood is a bedroom community with only a little production of leather goods, pharmaceuticals, metals, and minimal other light manufacturing. The cost of living in this charming Manhattan suburb is estimated at 33 % above the national average. Upper Englewood offers an urban atmosphere, with many restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, and city parks. The town is home to families and young professionals who commute to NYC.

What is the history of Englewood?

"The old world comes to the 21st century in Englewood and greater New Jersey.  The town was established in 1647 as a section of Hackensack, NJ. In 1871, it was de-annexed to form the independent township of Englewood with urban development plans. Originally Englewood Township, the city was named in 1859 after the Engle family, according to the accepted local account. However, earlier, it was informally referred to as the “English neighborhood” because it was the first predominantly English-speaking settlement in New Jersey. So, there is an ongoing debate about whether the name originated in that reference instead. The “wood” part of the name is presumed to be attributable to the dense forest enveloping the town of Englewood."

How is the weather in Englewood?

New Jersey is a lovely place for people who enjoy the four temperate changing seasons. Englewood, New Jersey receives an average of 47 inches of rain per year, which is above the national average of 38 inches. The town receives an additional 26 inches of snow, which equals the national average. There are 207 sunshine days on average per year, which is higher than the average of 205 across the United States. The annual high temperature in July is about 86 degrees in Englewood, and the January low is about 25. May, June, and September offer the most comfortable weather in Englewood. January and February bring the least desirable weather conditions in the area.

How do I get around town?

Because of its close proximity to NYC, you can choose your preferred mode of transportation. The popular northern area of town is very walkable, which makes it an appealing locale for many college students renting apartments in Englewood NJ. Over 60 % of Englewood’s employed residents drive their cars to work. Another 9 % carpool with neighbors, coworkers, or other acquaintances. About 11 % take buses to commute. Most Englewood residents will find that owning an automobile is the most convenient option for going to work.

What is the Englewood commute like?

Englewood, NJ offers all the commuter options you should expect as a NYC suburb. Multiple New Jersey bus lines run in Englewood, providing both local service and direct transportation to the NYC Port Authority terminal in Manhattan. Several buses offer connections to upper Manhattan. Englewood residential neighborhoods without close connection points for public transportation are walkable to work for many renters. But, other areas require residents to use a car to go to work. Many offer nearby access to biking options and commuter trains. The majority of Englewood North commuters, over 30 % of all the town’s working residents, spend between 30 to 45 minutes commuting one-way to work, which is slightly above the national average. Traffic between Englewood and Manhattan is well-known to be just what you would expect in one of the country’s most densely populated land areas. It’s heavy.
