Petersburg, VA has a rich background that is a vital part of the nation’s history. The area played a significant role in both the Revolutionary War and then later in the Civil War as it was the location of many key battles. Later, its black churches also served a lead role in the civil rights movement. This city, which has existed for over 270 years, has been dominated by three main industries, trade, tobacco, and transportation. It also holds the distinction of being one of the oldest cities in the entire state of Virginia as it dates back to 1750 and features seven historic districts, encompassing 700 buildings and 6,500 acres.

Petersburg, VA, summers are typically wet, muggy, and hot, while the winters are snowy and very cold. It is partly cloudy most often throughout the year. Temperatures average between 30 degrees on the cold end to 90 degrees on the hotter side. Rarely, Petersburg will experience more weather extremes with temperatures increasing to over 97 degrees or falling below 16 degrees Fahrenheit. Although Virginia overall has mild winters, the area is particularly prone to harsh winter storms. Even so, it only averages as a state 14 inches of snow annually. Comparatively, 28 inches is the nation’s average. The city of Petersburg itself averages only six inches of snow a year and around 46 inches of rain, annually.

While Petersburg has many walkable neighborhoods including the Ferndale Gardens and Walnut Hill, the city also boasts several public transportation options. For example, the Petersburg Area Transit buses run into Richmond daily which gives Petersburg residents the ability to avoid traffic while moving in and out of the city. In addition, the city has its own Greyhound bus station as well that provides even more transportation possibilities. However, even with these options, most Petersburg VA residents still own a vehicle, with families averaging one car per household. 

What is the Petersburg commute like?

Petersburg is also situated near some major highways, including Interstates 95, 85, and Route 301. This means that Petersburg residents can easily visit Richmond, Rocky Mount, or even North Carolina. The average commute for Petersburg residents is 24.4 minutes, which is lower than the state average by 14.8%. Around 88.1% of all workers within the city drive to work.

Petersburg apartments give residents access to a number of media options. Some of the best radio stations include the Colonial Radio Group, WNTW Radio, Wsoj J100 Fm Radio, Finney Broadcasting, and more. The other landmarks also hold historic significance that are worth exploring.  

What is there to do around Petersburg?

Much of what can be done either when living in Petersburg VA or visiting has to do with the area’s history. However, there are also options for those who like to go antiquing, as well as to walk, jog, fish or more. In fact, the Appomattox Riverside Park offers a wide variety of outdoor activities to enjoy. Swaders Sports Park, a laser tag and Go Kart venue, the Virginia Skydiving Center, and Petersburg Haunts offer even more variety.  

Any annual festivals or Petersburg events to know?

Petersburg isn’t without a great deal of annual festivals residents can enjoy as well including the ultra-popular Festival of Grapes and Hops. This festival draws in thousands annually to enjoy the offerings of local wineries, craft breweries, food, and even non-food vendors. Another notable option that locals as well as visitors love is the Appomattox River Wine Festival. This unique festival takes place on the banks of the Appomattox River and features wine, beer, cider, mead, and even music. 

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

As a suburb of Richmond, Petersburg residents can access all the entertainment options, restaurants, and more located in the big city after just a short drive. In addition, they are also only around 95 miles away from the ocean, meaning they are in close proximity to a beach vacation as well. In fact, residents are a quick trip away from Virginia Beach. 

Where is the best place to move in Petersburg?

There is no bad choice when it comes to selecting apartments in Petersburg. However, the most desired locations seem to be in the southeastern parts of the city, while the most affordable options tend to be more in the northeast region of the city.
