Rancho Cordova Overview

Incorporated in 2003, Rancho Cordova is a relatively recent addition to Sacramento County. Over the last 19 years, the city has experienced steady growth, making it one of the largest suburbs in the area. Over 79,000 people call Rancho Cordova home, and the town boasts a diverse population, job opportunities, and safe neighborhoods for families and individuals alike. Rancho Cordova has won the All-America City Award twice - in 2010 and 2019.

What is the history of Rancho Cordova?

Rancho Cordova's history dates back to the California Gold Rush. As settlers and miners made their way to Sacramento, some of them settled in the area. Much of the area was developed by John Sutter, who built mills along the river that marks the city's northern border. In fact, for a long time, the area was known as the community of Mills. There's also Sutter street, named after his contributions. The city got its name from the Cordova Vineyards, which were established in the 1800s. Allegedly, wine from the vineyards was served to President Teddy Roosevelt. The vineyards chose Cordova as a reference to the Cordoba region of Spain. The area grew immensely after World War II, and efforts to incorporate the city occurred in the 1950s and 60s. However, it wasn't until 2002 that a measure hit the ballot, and 78 percent of residents voted to incorporate.

How is the weather in Rancho Cordova?

As a central California city, Rancho Cordova gets hot and dry during the summer and cool and somewhat wet during the winter. The rest of the year, the town stays relatively warm and mild. Average summer temperatures are in the 70s and 80s, although they can reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. During the winter, the air rarely gets below 35 degrees. Rancho Cordova receives an average of about four inches of rain per year.

How do I get around town?

As with most California cities, many residents use their cars to get around town. However, Rancho Cordova also has a vibrant mass transit system, which is part of the greater Sacramento transportation network. The city has four light rail stops, five bus routes, and a proprietary shuttle service that goes through three neighborhoods. Other than mass transit and personal vehicles, Rancho Cordova was rated as a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly City in 2017. Cyclists have a network of trails and bike-friendly lanes throughout the city. Finally, residents can participate in a motorcycle rental program.

What is the Rancho Cordova commute like?

The El Dorado Freeway cuts through the northern half of Rancho Cordova, and it's the only highway in the city. The other major thoroughfares are Sunrise Blvd, which runs north/south, and Folsom Blvd, which runs alongside El Dorado. Because the El Dorado Freeway feeds into Sacramento, it's a primary traffic source in the city. Rush hour occurs in the morning and afternoon/evening as commuters head to and from work. Around town, traffic stays pretty minimal, although Sunrise Blvd can get backed up during peak hours.

What are the local media outlets?

Since Rancho Cordova is next to Sacramento, it doesn't have many media outlets of its own. However, there are a couple of local newspapers, including the Golden River Community Newspaper and the Rancho Cordova Post. Residents can also get the Sacramento Bee and other Sacramento-based newspapers. Local radio stations include KYDS, La Ranchera, and KDEE. All of these stations are in the greater Sacramento area.

Why live in Rancho Cordova, CA?

Southern California and the San Francisco Bay Area are crowded and expensive. Living in Rancho Cordova means that you can access the California lifestyle without dealing with high rents and overcrowded streets. This city is safer than most, with an average crime rate that's less than the rest of the country. Another reason to live in Rancho Cordova is if you appreciate nature and outdoor activities. The city caters to hikers, bikers, swimmers, and watersport adventurers. The American River and Lake Natoma are easily accessible from anywhere in the city.

What Rancho Cordova landmarks should I see?

Rancho Cordova doesn't have any specific landmarks within its borders. However, there are plenty of historical landmarks in the surrounding area, such as Marshall Gold Discovery Park and Old Sacramento. You can also visit Fort Sutter, one of the region's earliest settlements.

What is there to do around Rancho Cordova?

Although the city doesn't have its own landmarks, there are plenty of activities to do here. Many residents participate in outdoor sports and activities, such as fishing, bike riding, hiking, or skating. If you want to explore the American River, you can hop in a canoe or kayak and see where the current takes you. Rancho Cordova also has plenty of restaurants and retailers to suit every need. No matter what kind of food you're in the mood for, you'll find it here.

Any annual festivals or Rancho Cordova events to know?

Rancho Cordova has quite a few festivals and annual events. One example is a wine tasting event that allows guests to sample various area wines along with food offerings from local vendors. The city also hosts a motocross tournament, equestrian tournaments, and various holiday parades. In June, the town hosts its own Pride parade, or residents can go to the one in Sacramento.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Those who love the wilderness can explore the vast green spaces on either side. To the west is the Mendicino National Forest, and to the right is the Tahoe National Forest. For those who prefer city vacations, San Francisco is just about 90 minutes away, making it super convenient to visit for a day, a weekend, or several weeks. Reno is about 2.5 hours away, so gamblers can get their fix without flying all the way to Las Vegas.

Where is the best place to move in Rancho Cordova?

Thanks to the El Dorado Freeway, Rancho Cordova is unofficially divided into North and South. As a rule, the neighborhoods to the north, such as Cordova Meadows, Cordova Park, Glenfair, and Mills Ranch, are all highly desirable. The closer you get to the American River, the nicer the neighborhoods. In the south, communities like Stone Creek and the Villages of Zinfandel are also pretty incredible. Overall, the only less-than-desirable spots are between Folsom Blvd and the El Dorado Fwy from Bradshaw to Mather Field Road.
