Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area surrounding Burlington, North Carolina was inhabited by Native Americans. The early European settlers were Quakers. Many of them came from Ireland. Burlington itself was created in the mid-1800s when Orange County was divided into several counties, including Alamance County, where Burlington sits. The city grew rapidly when the North Carolina railroad expanded through the area, creating numerous jobs for people in the area. Now, Burlington is a bustling city that sits between Greensboro, Durham, and Chapel Hill.
The weather in Burlington, North Carolina is relatively hot throughout the year. During the summer, it is not unusual for temperatures to get over 100° F. During the winter, it gets below freezing regularly. The area usually gets approximately six inches of snow throughout the winter. It is also relatively human in Burlington. Because it is only a few hours from the coast, it can get hot and humid during the summer. If you like having four distinct seasons, you will enjoy living in Burlington.
The vast majority of people who live in Burlington have a car. Even though there are some public transit buses that pass through the city, it will be difficult to get around without a car. Even though you can walk around downtown Burlington, it is not that big. If you need to get to Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, or Chapel Hill, you will need a car. If you need to take the train, there is a train station in Raleigh. You can take the train to Washington DC, Charlotte, or any other major city on the East Coast. If you need to board a plane, Raleigh-Durham International Airport is approximately 30 minutes away on Interstate 40.
Overall, traffic in Burlington is relatively mild. When compared to the traffic you will find in the Raleigh-Durham area, it is not nearly as bad. The major highways in the area include Interstate 85, which travels to Charlotte and Durham, and Interstate 40, which travels to Raleigh and Greensboro. These highways can get busy during rush hour, as there are lots of people who commute through Burlington for work. On the other hand, traffic is relatively mild the rest of the time.
Because of the proximity to Durham, Chapel Hill, and Greensboro, most of the major media outlets come from these cities. Some of the biggest radio stations in Burlington include WKNC, WXDU, and WRKV. Some of the biggest TV stations include WRAZ, WNCN, WRDC, and WTVD. Some of the biggest newspapers in the area include the News & Observer, the Carolina Times, the Triangle Tribune, and the Butner Creedmoor news.
There are numerous reasons why so many people choose to live in Burlington, North Carolina. First, the cost of housing is relatively low. When compared to Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and Durham, it is much less expensive to live in Burlington than it is to live in than these other major cities. Second, there are plenty of outstanding educational institutions relatively close by. Examples include Duke University in Durham and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Finally, you are not that far from Greensboro, Durham, Chapel Hill, or Raleigh. If you need to get to any of these cities, it is not that long of a drive.
There are a number of significant landmarks in the local area. One of the most popular options is Grand Daddy's Antique Mall. This is a great opportunity for people to learn about the history of the area while also exploring amazing furniture that still works well until this day. Another popular location is the Alamance Battleground State Historic Site. This was the site of an early skirmish during the Revolutionary War. Many people also love to visit The Animal Park at the Conservators Center. There is a long legacy of conservation in the local area, and this is an opportunity for people to learn more about some of the animals that must be protected.
There are lots of fun things to do in Burlington as well. For example, those who enjoy the outdoors will want to visit Cedarock Park. There is a historic farm here that offers tours, plenty of waterfalls to look at, and sports fields to enjoy. Those who are looking for something fun to do indoors might want to check out the Children's Museum of Alamance County. This is a great opportunity for children to be active. Finally, it is impossible to mention the area without encouraging everyone to see a basketball game at Duke or UNC.

There is always something fun going on.
There are plenty of vacation opportunities that are relatively close to Burlington, North Carolina. For example, if you like sports, you may want to make the two-hour drive to Charlotte. They are, you can catch the Charlotte Knights, the Carolina Panthers, or the Charlotte Hornets. If you are willing to drive a bit further, you can reach the beach. You are not that far from Wilmington, North Carolina, which sits at the eastern edge of Interstate 40. If you are willing to get on a plane to go on vacation, then you can make the short drive to Raleigh-Durham International Airport. They are, you can reach just about every major city in the country relatively quickly.
