Instead of playing virtual golf in your Charlotte apartments, head over to the Eastland neighborhood, where you'll find...Nightmare on Independence. Part haunted house, part mini golf adventure, this odd combo of a terror ride is open all year round and features gruesomely-made up ghouls, black lighting and devilishly creepy music. Some of the effects are pretty creative, such as the checkered walls, skull crucifixes and bloodthirsty mutants with gross rotting teeth. The full-on Nightmare experience is meant for adults, but if you have some teeny apartment-ites with you then the staff at the front desk will gladly tone down the scare factor to accommodate. If the macabre goings-on aren't your thing, there's also The Haunted Mill which features Cosmic Mini Golf, a non-spooky outer space-themed course of nine holes featuring 3D alien and spaceship designs. Adult admission for the Nightmare course is $7 for nine holes and $10 for 18 holes; for Cosmic it's $8. If you're there with other people and want to wander off, there are some arcade games and a pool table elsewhere in the main house. Naturally, the cheese factor here is pretty high, but even though that's to be expected of any haunted house, it's completely offset by the kitsch factor of the mini golf as it places the emphasis more on the game rather than walking through a black empty room with strobe lights and pretending to be scared. If you do go back to playing regular mini golf, all the ghoulish distractions from here might improve your game concentration, but you'll definitely want dare to go back to Nightmare.
