What is the history of Morgantown?

The city now known as Morgantown was highly contested for many decades by white settlers, Native Americans, and British and French soldiers. In 1767, Zackquill and Dave Morgan entered the area. Seven major forts were built over the next 10 years as well as several smaller ones. Iná1772,áZackquill Morgan established a homestead, therefore settling the city. It was incorporated in 1838 with a population around 700 residents and joined the newly formed state of West Virginia in 1863.á

Highway 19 runs near I-79 but closer inside the city to the WVU campus, whileáHighway 119 flows more through the middle of town near the Morgantown Municipal Airport. While the city of Morgantown itself has a comfortableá30,000 residents, the metro area encompasses several other cities and now boasts nearly 120,000 residents. Several neighborhoods throughout town were once independent cities but were annexed as Morgantown began to grow. One such town was Suncrest, which became part of Morgantown in 1949. Sunnyside is an older neighborhood near the downtown WVU campus. As such, it is primarily student housing. First Ward is the place to be if you like nature, biking, and hiking trails. Southpark is a designated historic district and was one of the first suburbs of Morgantown. Woodburn is attractive to families thanks to its parks, nearby school, and a feeling of community, while still being near downtown.
