The city now known as Morgantown was highly contested for many decades by white settlers, Native Americans, and British and French soldiers. In 1767, Zackquill and Dave Morgan entered the area. Seven major forts were built over the next 10 years as well as several smaller ones. Iná1772,áZackquill Morgan established a homestead, therefore settling the city. It was incorporated in 1838 with a population around 700 residents and joined the newly formed state of West Virginia in 1863.á
