Just 20 minutes outside of San Francisco sits the city of Albany, California. Full of life and beauty, this city has plenty to do. What is the history of Albany?

Albany was first settled by the Native Americans, who lived here until the beginning of the 19th century. After having their land taken over by Spanish conquerors, they moved out and the area was predominately used for raising cattle. The California gold rush brought an influx of people, and the land was eventually converted into sections for miners to live in. By 1908 it was incorporated as the City of Ocean View and in 1909 voters decided on changing the name to Albany. 

How is the weather in Albany?

Albany has a comfortable temperature year-round, so you shouldn't need more than a sweater and a rain jacket. Winters are cooler and damp, with an average temperature of 59 degrees. Summertime brings in dry, warmer weather and the average temperature is 73 degrees. Residents who live in apartments in Albany have the benefit of enjoying comfortable weather year-round. 

How do I get around town?

While most people choose to drive, there are a variety of transportation methods available. Within 30 miles of Albany is 2 airports as well as Amtrak stations for those wanting to take the train. There are 17 train stations within 30 miles of Albany, making public transportation a cinch.

The average commute for the Albany resident is 30 minutes, and many choose to drive themselves to work. That being said, the option for public transportation is heavily available and Albany residents utilize this service 398% more than the rest of the country. They also tend to carpool more often, keeping the environment and finances in mind. The major highway here is State Route 123, also known as San Pablo Avenue. 

What are the local media outlets?

For local community news, residents tune into KALB and ABC7. The city utilizes the East Bay Times as their local newspaper and there are a variety of radio stations as well. Power Talk 96.7 is used for delivering news and talk radio, while Fox Sports Radio 1314 provides current news on sporting events. Sunny 105.3 plays a mix of old hits and new hits for those who want a variety of music in their morning commute.

Albany is unique, with a highly diverse economic and cultural population, it has an infectious atmosphere that's hard to shake. As a suburb of Oakland, they have excellent public schools and many private schools to choose from. It has also been ranked as one of the top 5 suburban cities to live in California. This ranking is based on public schools, weather, nightlife, family friendliness, diversity, and more. Albany apartments are close to many bars and restaurants, allowing residents to walk to and from their destination with ease. 

What Albany landmarks should I see?

The most well-known university near Albany is the University of California Berkeley.  Berkeley City College and California College of Arts are also well ranked local colleges as well. One of the oldest landmarks in the area is the Albany Theater, which has survived the test of time. The building was built in 1920 and was taken over by the Albany Theater in 1935. The Albany Theater was founded in 1914 and resided up the street before occupying the building it is at now. The Thorson House, Fountain at the Circle, and the Campanile are all popular tourist attractions. 

What is there to do around Albany?

There is an endless list of things to do for those living in apartments in Albany. Nature enthusiasts often gravitate towards hiking at Point Isabel Regional Shoreline, rock climbing at the Indian Rock Park, or walking their dog at the Cesar E. Chavez Park. Betting enthusiasts can find entertainment at Golden Gate Fields, where horse racing and dining are popular attractions. Avid shoppers find some of the hottest stores on Fourth Street, best known for its many events and shops which date back to the early 1980s. Of course, the Golden Gate Bridge is a popular attraction and is only 13 miles from Albany. 

Any annual festivals or Albany events to know?

The Albany Film Festival is one of the most popular annual events in Albany. Other nearby cities have festivals that are easy to travel to. The Avocado Con in March, as well as the SF Coffee Festival in November, are always good to check out. In April, the San Francisco International Beer Festival and the Annual San Francisco Salsa Festival are swarmed by hundreds of locals. No matter the time of year, you can always find a fun festival or event to check out near Albany apartments. 

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

San Francisco is a short 20-minute drive from Albany and is one of the most popular vacation spots in the country. While you're here, check out the Golden Gate Bridge, the largest Chinatown in the United States, or take a tour of Alcatraz which housed military prisoners in the 1800s. Fisherman's Warf is a popular destination for seafood lovers, and you can also watch the Harbor seals swim and layout on the rocks. Residents who live in apartments in Albany frequently visit all of these popular spots.

Some of the best Albany apartments are found in the neighborhoods of East Bay, Solano Avenue, and Albany Hills. The population in Albany Hills is roughly 12,000, with a median income of $73,000. East Bay has the lowest population of the three neighborhoods, with approximately 2,000 residents per square mile and an approximate median income of $75,000. Finally, Solano Avenue has the highest population of these with 13,000 residents per square mile. The average income is $115,000.
