Write a ReviewOne of the most populated cities of Fairfax County in the proud state of Virginia, Herndon is a warm and welcoming locale that's ideal for both young working professionals and blue collar families alike. Offering much in the way of opportunity and nearby amenities, this slice of Virginia hospitality is a fantastic place to live, work and play.
Taking its name from a famed naval sailor in the mid-1800s, Herndon established itself primarily as a dairy farming community. A primary stop along the regional railroad helped accelerate growth in the city, and today Herndon is known primarily as both a bedroom community and vacation spot for many working in the Washington, DC market.
Summers are often hot and humid in Herndon, and likewise spring can see its fair share of rainfall. Fall is crisp and highlighted by leaf color explosions, and winters can be quite cold, although heavy snow is uncommon.
Most residents of apartments in Herndon rely upon a personal car or truck for day to day transport, although a number of biking lanes and trails have been added in recent years. Taxis and ride sharing options are plentiful, and general bus service across town can be found with ease. Washington, DC acts as home to the major airport in the city's proximity, with numerous national and international flights offered daily. The old train depot has been converted into a museum, with rail service in short supply currently.
The Washington Dulles toll road acts as the primary roadway for commuters, and traffic can see sluggish conditions on most 9-to-5 work days. Van Buren Street is the main road through the city proper, and at just over four square miles most Herndon residents can traverse the city limits with ease.

May through August also boast the Friday Night Live! music series, and the monthly Farmer's Market ensures many Herndon apartments will have easy access to a wide assortment of fresh produce.
Washington, DC makes an excellent and nearby weekend getaway, complete with the Washington Monument, Smithsonian and many more world famous historic hot spots. Virginia wildlife is truly something to behold, and a number of national parks offer camping, fishing and hiking. Of course, Baltimore's famous crab cakes and nightlife can be reached with ease as well, and the live music scene of Richmond is only a short car ride away from many Herndon rentals.
