"In an effort to create a Christian college of the highest order in a major city, Houston Baptist University was chartered in 1960 by the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Their doors would be officially opened in September of 1963 with a freshman class of 193 students that has only grown since then. Rich with culture and limitless fun, Houston is the perfect city for a student who enjoys the apartment lifestyle. HBU's perfect location makes it a perfect fit for an Apartment-ite who is trying to expand their knowledge. Located off Highway 59 between Downtown Houston and the city's southwestern suburbs, HBU offers quick and easy access to numerous sites and major destinations throughout the city of Houston. Literally minutes away from all that Houston has to offer such as professional sporting venues, popular restaurants, museums and shopping malls. Surprisingly, while located in the 4th largest city in the nation the university still carries a small-town campus feel. With over 50 undergraduate majors offered and five colleges to choose from, Houston Baptist University is always a top candidate for students looking for a top level education from a leading university. Colleges offered at the university include College of Arts and Humanities, College of Business and Economics, College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, College of Nursing and College of Science and Mathematics. U.S. News and World Report has ranked Houston Baptist University in the top tier among the ""Best Universities"" offering master's degrees in the western region. This year the university will transition from a quarter system to semester beginning in the fall 2008. In the 2008-2009 academic school year, the average tuition cost for 12 hours is $19,390 with an additional $5,770 needed for room and board. Houston Baptist Universities policy is that all students under 21 when the semester starts must stay on campus unless they are married, a graduate student, enrolled in eleven or fewer credits, or living at home with parents. The university encourages student involvement and participation in clubs and events associated with dorm life. Students are already looking forward to the co-ed Lake House Residence College which is currently in construction and will house more than 370 students overlooking a magnificent lake. This apartments style suite will be available fall 2009. Freshman can stay in the Reuben & Rebecca Bates Philips Residence Colleges for Men and Women. A little different from your traditional dorm room these suite style accommodations come furnished with air conditioning, cable and wireless internet. Each suite can hold up to eight residents with four bedrooms, two baths and a living room. The free weekly cleaning service for bathrooms is reason enough to call these dorms home. The Mest Wing for Women is your more traditional style dorm room with two bedrooms sharing a common bathroom that can hold up to four residents. Air conditioning, cable, and internet access are still available as well as the cleaning service. Prices range from $1550 to $2200 depending on which floor plan is best for you. Upperclassmen normally stay in Husky Village which is an apartment style community withing walking distance to every major destination on campus. Units are equipped with full kitchens, dishwasher and refrigerator, dining/study areas, cable and high-speed internet. There is a maximum of two residents per bathroom and prices range from $1350 for unfurnished floor plans up to $3825 for the best furnished floor plan. Activities are constantly arranged for the residents to take part in to create more of a community environment. For more information on the residence halls at Houston Baptist University check out: http://www.hbu.edu/hbu/Student_Life.asp?SnID=369936922 While HBU prefers students to stay on campus, there are many alternatives in the vast Houston area when it comes to outstanding apartment locations. Some students are leary about living with a person they don't know, but Forrest Gump said it best ""Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get"". Staying in their own apartment not only allows students the piece and privacy to study and party in their own specific way but allows them to choose the amenities that are just right for them. Check out some of our suggestions of great apartments near the Houston Baptist University campus in case you are looking for the perfect off campus living situation. Don't gamble on other universities when the sure bet is clearly Houston Baptist University--A high quality of life and education."
