North Las Vegas isn’t a directional indication for navigating Sin City — it’s a destination with plans to increase its social footprint in the coming years. The city is home to families with a variety of incomes and offers something for everyone, from mom-and-pop eateries to chain coffeehouses and the common amenities of the suburbs — movie theaters and community shopping centers.
Originally established in 1919 as a little hideaway removed from the bureaucracy of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas did become a hideaway fairly quickly. However, it was for moonshine during the Prohibition era. Over the past 100 years, it has welcomed a mix of housing, and it’s downtown is the epicenter of a major revitalization plan.
North Las Vegas is located in the Mojave desert, exposing residents to the typical desert climate — hot summers and mild winters. In other words, shorts are appropriate almost year round. Temperatures only dip below freezing on rare occasions — no snow tires needed — but can rise above 105 degrees frequently in the summer.
A car is best for traveling around North Las Vegas, particularly if work requires a commute to other locations outside of Las Vegas proper. RTC Transit operates buses with the Silver Star line servicing North Las Vegas and providing connection to other buses serving adjacent communities and Las Vegas. A minimal number of biking lanes are available. North Las Vegas does have an airport offering regional flights while McCarran International in Las Vegas flies worldwide.
North Las Vegas commutes take approximately 20 minutes one way. For those working in Vegas, Interstate 15 provides a north, south route into the city. From the airport area, U.S. 95 provides a western approach to both North Las Vegas and Sin City while Nevada 215 connects the northern fringes of the city and provides a path to Death Valley National Park and the Sacramento and San Francisco areas of California.
"Plenty of media options exist in the Los Vegas area due to the population density, and North Las Vegas benefits from the variety. Ten major television stations and over 20 radio stations are in the market as well as ""The Las Vegas Review-Journal,"" a newspaper that circulates statewide. For a radio station that blends old and new tunes, check out KLUC-FM 98.5 while KPLV-FM 93.1 offers more Top 40 jams."
With accessible rents for families and singles and convenient access to many manufacturing jobs as well as careers based on the thriving nightlife in Los Vegas, North Las Vegas is a welcoming place to call home. With new developments in the works and plans to revitalize the downtown, the future looks bright.
City Hall may not seem like a major landmark, but in North Las Vegas, it is an aesthetically pleasing multi-story tower with a gleaming glass facade, shade trees and a fun pergola vibe for the entry points. It’s also the hub of the up and coming plans to upgrade downtown. City View Park’s waterfall and stream can’t be missed when touring the city. Stop to enjoy a picnic in the evening and enjoy the variety of plant and animal life that call the park home.
The Aliante Nature Discovery Park is a family favorite option in North Las Vegas. It features dinosaur-related attractions for kids and has 20 acres for walking as well as tennis and volleyball courts for adults. Splash pads make it a great place to cool off in the summer. To enjoy gambling without a trip into Sin City, Texas Station offers a variety of gaming options and live entertainment. For education, check out the Planetarium for a guided tour through the stars.
North Las Vegas provides easy access to all of the festivals offered in Sin City, such as the Exodus Festival for electronic music, the iHeart Radio Music Festival and the Las Vegas Film Festival. In 2019, North Las Vegas plans to welcome the first ever Balloon Glow event in Craig Ranch Regional Park. It will feature glowing hot air balloons each evening with an opportunity to experience tethered rides.
Hop next door to Vegas for a weekend getaway with fine shopping and dining experiences at any of the major resorts.The Grand Canyon is only a five hour drive away on the interstate if you want to experience a natural wonder or enjoy some camping. For the beaches of the Los Angeles area, a trip to Disneyland in Anaheim or a bit of old Hollywood charm, expect a four drive to reach the city.
The Wann community and Vegas Heights feature a high concentration of residents under the age of 40 and a diverse population. With a median household income slightly below average, these are areas to secure lower rents. Newer developments firmly ensconced in North Las Vegas and closer to Las Vegas will offer the best apartment-living amenities, like a pool, indoor apartment access, package services and modern finishes within the apartment units.
