Ogden Overview

Ogden is known as the beautiful-but-shy little sibling of Salt Lake City. Despite this reputation, it offers an unrivaled mix of affordability, cultural activities, outdoor recreation, and a strong job market for anyone at any stage of their career.

What is the history of Ogden?

Originally named Fort Buenaventura, Ogden was eventually built as a transitional access point between the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads. In 1847, Mormon settlers had purchased the land and renamed it Brownsville. It was later renamed Ogden after fur trader and leader of the Hudson’s Bay Company, Peter Skene Ogden.

How is the weather in Ogden?

On average, Ogden experiences moderate-to-hot summers and cool winters. The warmer months from May through September are usually dry and October through April is considered monsoon season. Residents with apartments in Ogden will get to experience all seasons with snow in the winter and mostly sunny days in the summer. The seasons are also mostly equal in length.

How do I get around town?

The Utah Transit Authority operates numerous bus routes within the city as well as the surrounding areas, all the way to Salt Lake City. The Frontrunner is a new commuter rail that runs north and south with a stop at the Ogden Intermodal Hub. Ogden-Hinckley Airport provides municipal flights to larger airports within the United States and is located in southwest Ogden. For major international flights, Salt Lake City International Airport is only a half hour south of the city. A car is highly recommended if you plan on living in an apartment in Ogden.

What is the Ogden commute like?

Ogden is located at the intersection of two major interstates. East-West Interstate 84 merges with Interstate 15 near the Ogden-Hinkney Airport and remains as a combined highway all the way through the city heading north-south.

What are the local media outlets?

The Standard-Examiner is Ogden’s local newspaper. Many television stations are shared with the nearby major Salt Lake City market including KTVX, the oldest television station in the Mountain Time Zone, affiliated with ABC. Since Utah shares most of its radio stations throughout the state, genres of every type can be found with KVFX on both 94.5 and 98.3 being one of the most popular.

Why live in Ogden, UT?

Geographically speaking, residents living in Ogden apartments can enjoy a more diverse landscape than most other cities could only dream of. Sandwiched between the Rocky Mountains and the Great Salt Lake, Ogden offers a superior mix of city life and outdoor recreation accessible from almost anywhere in the city. In addition it is home to the headquarters of several national corporations and is consistently ranked among the best places in the country for a career.

What Ogden landmarks should I see?

Peery’s Egyptian Theatre is one of Ogden’s oldest theatres and has been preserved and consistently updated to be able to show current films, most notably as a venue at the Sundance Film Festival. Ogden is also home to 3 different institutions of higher education including Weber State University, Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College, and Stevens–Henager College.

What is there to do around Ogden?

A major attraction to the locals who live in Ogden apartments is the Historic 25th Street located downtown. This 3 block stretch of road is a one-stop-shop featuring good food, window shopping, art galleries, and even a farmer’s market. At night, this is also the street that features the city’s most vibrant nightlife with over 8 bars and clubs. Outdoor recreation will also be unavoidable in Ogden with numerous hiking, skiing, and kayaking opportunities right outside your front door.

Any annual festivals or Ogden events to know?

The most anticipated time of year is during the Sundance Film Festival. While the majority of the films are shown in Salt Lake City, the influence has undoubtedly spread north to Ogden as a satellite venue. The city also introduced its own Foursite Film Festival in 2004. Additionally, Ogden hosts a wealth of other community events including the Ogden Arts Festival, Harvest Moon Festival, Ogden Winterfest and the Ogden Marathon.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Situated between the Great Salt Lake and the Rocky mountains, Ogden is almost a vacation getaway all in itself. However, if you feel like spending the weekend out on the town, Salt Lake City is only a half an hour’s drive away. In the other direction, Yellowstone National Park is about 5 hours north of Ogden and is considered by many to be America’s greatest national park.

Where is the best place to move in Ogden?

Despite its size, living situations vary greatly depending on where you want an apartment in Ogden. For young singles, Downtown Ogden offers the greatest mix of activities and nightlife. However, for those looking for a more relaxed, outdoorsy vibe, look near any edge of the city for either a spectacular mountain view or take in the stunning Great Salt Lake.
