Ottawa Overview
As the capital city of Canada, Ottawa, ON has a thriving job market and cultural scene. Thats what draws many people to seek rental homes and apartments in Ottawa when they first move here. Its a family-friendly city with annual festivals and a good school system. Ottawa also offers a lower cost of living than any of the nations comparable metropolitan areas.
What is the history of Ottawa?
The area around Ottawa was originally inhabited by the Algonquin people. European settlers arrived in the early 1600s. The three major rivers running through Ottawa have always offered opportunities for travel and trade. Ottawa was finally selected as the capital of Canada in 1857 due to its centralized location between Toronto and Kingston, and Montreal and Quebec City.
How is the weather in Ottawa?
Expect snow and ice to be a major part of your life during winters in Ottawa. People who enjoy winter sports, ice skating, and cross-country skiing will fit right in. A light amount of snow (less than 5 cm) falls almost every day in January, February, and March. Warm and humid summers are the norm, although temperatures rarely climb above 27 degrees C in July. Early fall is considered the best time of year to visit Ottawa when temperatures are mild but not too chilly and the leaves begin to change color.
How do I get around town?
Ottawa maintains a great system of bike trails that are kept plowed during the winter months, making it possible to bike to work year-round. The O-Train light rail system offers four routes for rail commuters to get to and from work. The city also has a bus rapid transit system that uses dedicated bus-only streets. Service is available from most parts of Ottawa and across the river to Gatineau. Ottawa has an international airport and three regional airports in the area.
What is the Ottawa commute like?
The Trans-Canada Highway runs east-west through Ottawa. Five bridges cross the Ottawa River between the capital and Gatineau, including two in Downtown Ottawa. The busiest one is the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge which originates in the Lower Town neighbourhood. Expect heavy traffic on that bridge during rush hour. Speaking of which, Ottawa has some of the longest commute times of any metro area in Canada. Commuters spend an average of 54 minutes in traffic, one-way, when getting to and from work.
What are the local media outlets?
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is headquartered in Ottawa. Theres also a local CBC station, as well as a CTV one. More than 50 radio stations offer virtually every genre of music, as well as sports and news/talk formats in English and French--and thats just on the FM dial. The city also has two English-language newspapers and a French one.
Why live in Ottawa, ON?
Ottawa has a provincial land transfer tax, but not a municipal one. This makes a major difference in the cost of living in Ottawa compared to many other Canadian metro areas. Apartments in Ottawa cost several hundred dollars per month less than comparable rentals in Toronto or Vancouver, for example. Ottawa has a little bit of something for everyone. The Downtown and Little Town areas provide a bounty of museums, theatres, parks, landmarks, eateries, and nightclubs.
What Ottawa landmarks should I see?
Ottawa is a very "water-privileged" city when it comes to real estate and rentals. The confluence of the Rideau, Ottawa, and Gatineau Rivers provides ample activities for boating, sightseeing, and other activities. Rideau Canal turns into the worlds largest outdoor ice skating rink every winter. Most of the nations main government institutions are located in Ottawa, including Parliament, the Supreme Court, and the Prime Ministers residence. The Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica is the oldest and largest church in the city, and an engineering marvel that you will want to see up close.
What is there to do around Ottawa?
Cold War history buffs will enjoy a tour of the Diefenbunker in nearby Carp. Its the largest known underground bunker in the world, built to protect Canadas government in the event of a nuclear attack. The Diefenbunker is mainly a museum today. The ByWard Market Heritage Hall has a great indoor market that is an extremely popular shopping destination. The Canadian Museum of Nature, the Peace Tower, the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, and Saunders Farm all make for good family outings with kids.
Any annual festivals or Ottawa events to know?
Ottawa has annual festivals throughout the year that are wildly popular. If youre into bagpipes and hot chocolate, the Great Canadian Kilt Skate is a blast every February. Winterlude is a two-week family festival with sledding, ice sculptures, and indigenous cultural activities. The Ottawa PoutineFest in May is your best opportunity to experience this unique Canadian cuisine (french fries, cheese curds, and brown gravy). The Dragon Boat Festival is the biggest of its kind in North America. You can also enjoy music festivals throughout the year in many different genres.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?
A two-hour drive south of Ottawa will bring you to Kingston, located on the northern shores of Lake Ontario. This is a fun vacation destination, as a ferry system can take you to Wolfe Island, Simcoe Island, and other destinations. You can find waterfront hotels and B&Bs for a great weekend getaway (or longer). If you take the Trans-Canada Highway east from Ottawa for two hours, youll arrive in Montreal where you can enjoy the true French-Canadian experience. The city is fully bilingual and its a completely different experience compared to life in Ottawa.
Where is the best place to move in Ottawa?
Apartments in Downtown Ottawa offer access to a thriving city nightlife, the Gothic-style government buildings of Parliament, and much more. You can even find apartments with water views in some cases. The Glebe is another popular neighborhood. If you can find a rental there, youll have access to shopping, dining, schools, and some of the biggest waterfront parks in Ottawa. Carp is a village in the western part of Ottawa that offers a more rural experience. There are numerous new-construction homes and apartments here. Its a less crowded place to live, so long as you dont mind the longer commute into Downtown.
